Each bale is marked with a minimum price per pound. The auctioneer starts with that price. Replies from the bidders may be verbal, the flick of a finger, the nod of a head, or simply a wink. Each bale ranges from 500 to 800+ pounds. A bale that sells at $2 per pound is what the winner pays for the bale at the warehouse. The buyer then must arrange for and pay the loading and shipping costs to the warehouse of the company purchasing the tobacco. The purchasing company must then pay the labor of breaking down the bale, sorting it, discarding the defective material, and repackaging, redistributing it.
