Any idea what they could be and from where.... his old man was a seaman, & sth africa seems to come to mind ???

From S Africa, Most prop Cow Shyte  joke. My Late Father also sometimes smoked black cigars, had a sweet taste, think there was banana leaves involved. Sorry no idea what they were, I can remember they were in a red labeled box.
Cheers Ben

Could be.......I haven't seen any but seeing that King Edward makes them it is possible that they are available in SA.

Well aged and fully fermented (or kilned) oscuro leaf--from the top of the plant--usually has a naturally sweet taste. This is true of many cigar leaf varieties. You might also look at the little, dry Italian cigars (Toscanos, Parodi, etc.). They are usually machine made, with a black, fairly rustic wrapper. Their taste is slightly sweet, with a somewhat harsh smoke. I believe that Toscanos are made from an Italian strain of Kentucky dark air-cured leaf. Some have a bit of fire-cured as well.

Like the answers that Google provides, it's up to you to figure out if my answers are a load of crap or not. Unlike Google, I won't usually link an advertisement for fire-grilled burgers to an article about a volcanic eruption that rained fire on a hapless village. Algorithms have their limitations.

A forum search of "I have no idea" by deluxestogie yields two pages of threads.
