Last night we had a mother of a hail storm, so my decision to plant later paid off. If I had tobacco in the soil it would have been destroyed. The peach and tomato farmers in my area really got nailed. Does anybody else have severe hail storms.

Wow, I read the title of the thread and my heart jumped into my throat. I was imagining a demolished baccy field. I'm glad you hadn't planted yet. We had a storm a few years ago with baseball sized hail. My friend had vinyl siding on his house and it went right through the siding and punched big dents into the inside drywall. His house looked like it was in a war zone. All the car dealers were wiped out. I worked at a body shop at the time and we fixed hail damage for months. We rarely get hail as a rule, and large hail is very rare here. (Alabama)

All I have to say is Holy Flirking Snit!

We rarely get hail and it's mostly an early spring thing when we do. Occasionally we get some in summer during big thunder storms. It's our biggest fear and the only thing that could really totally wipe us out. But nothing like these stories or like Knucklehead described. At least our house would still be ok. Man......

Great article Bob. Thanks for posting it

around three years ago i got wiped out in the middle of growing season. i thought it was bad until i heard from johnlee1933 and he said i grow wrapper. cigarette tobacco with a bunch of holes sucks, but wrapper leafs with a bunch of holes is useless.

I was going to comment but thought better of it, I think Ben was on a serious note. The Weeding Dress becomes a Wetting Dress & the drapes Fido mistook for a tree could be better off. At least it wasn't a shoe...
Heavy hail sucks no matter how it falls.

Didn't get any hail here in Albuquerque NM this year. NE NM got two ft. However I did get a catagory 5 down brust that wiped out most of My crop in the back.(no salvage) I did get a nice little one out frnt. Coulda been everything- It snaped poles every where as well as trees and roofs.
