Diseased Jaffna was removed, along
with the soil and roots, and replaced with a pretty good brand of compost (greenhouse tomatoes love it.), and a Small Stalk Black Mammoth back-up.
The afflicted Jaffna is stalk sun curing. At the garden- won’t bring it back to the house for fear of infecting seedling back-ups.IMG_5278.jpeg

IMG_5296.jpegPolygon’s write up for this “Basma Baffra”,
Which is showing an interesting “corkscrew” growth habit in the upper leaves:

Oriental type samsun from Turkey. It came to me from Germany under the name Basma Baffra, but the petiole leaf already indicates that this variety does not belong to Basma.
The variety is medium-ripening. The period from planting to flowering - 56-73 (in fact 74) days. In previous cultivation - 62 days.
The shape of the plant is bell-shaped. The height of the bush is about 1.3 meters. The flower is pink. The leaf is petiolate, the leaf lamina is broadly oval, heart-shaped, green in color. The number of leaves is 34, the size of the leaf of the middle tier is 18x12 cm.
The variety is not resistant to potato Y-virus (vein necrosis (PVY)) and
phytophthora (BS). It is resistant to tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and gray rot (Botrytis cinerea).
Nicotine content 0.9-1%

Here are some pictures I took this morning. Hyang Cho test run in front of my house I'm letting flower and seed and I have about 30 in the garden that I will top the tips to see if the plant changes much after being topped. One thing I was surprised is that there were zero suckers throughout the entire cycle, that may change after topping.
Suckering definitely gets bad after topping!
Not as bad as rusticas, but worse than the dark air cured and Virginias I’m growing.

6 Hyang Cho were harvested from the field.
Hung up in the garden house next to the sick Jaffna. I will just wilt them here and bring them to the cellar for stalk curing.
One spot was replanted with fresh compost and a Vallejano from the greenhouse.

Windowsill Baffra Basma flowering, and first priming.
Black Sea Samsun (2nd from the left) hasn’t started flowering, and a Canik has joined the ranks on the right side.
Windowsill Bursa priming has begun.
My seed starting set up makes a good sun curing and final drying rack, but it isn’t big enough. My living room smells amazing!

Cellar is starting to get crowded….
Stalk harvested the “Samsoun Orient” that has been allowed to flower.
The Hyang Cho from my in ground garden is yellowing up perfectly, compared to Herzegovina Flor, which starts browning at the stem attachment to the stalk, requiring me to prime it and move it to my living room seedling rack, in order to sun cure it.IMG_5429.jpegIMG_5430.jpeg

The experimental patch of Herzegovina Flor has started flowering. None are more than knee-height, with about 12 leaves.
I’m going to top this batch, and compare it to the untopped plants I grew in containers.
Flavor won’t be as good, or sweet, but maybe yields will be better….IMG_5436.jpegIMG_5435.jpeg

Burley (KY17) has been stalk harvested and is wilting in the garden house.
Just outside of their root zones I planted a row of Small Stalk Black Mammoth and a row+ of Vallejano.
No idea if they will resist the plague destroying the rest of my crop (except Virginia Gold and the rusticas), but I’d rather see them try in the field than die in small pots in the greenhouse. They need some fertilizer, and it was placed under their root ball- they should color up once they find it.IMG_5458.jpeg
