I have some NB-11 seeds and I was wondering if I need to refresh them. I would rather not this year if I don't have to. Do other people have these?

Keep in mind that most of the "new" varieties of tobacco are simply a well-know variety that a grower forgot to properly label, or that was sold as one thing, but turned out to be something different. And then there are the pollination "accidents", that result in an unexpected F1 generation. Intentional crosses take 5 to 7 years of tedious work to result in a stable, desirable, identifiable new variety.

I don't know the story on NB-11. We do know the stories on thousands of established, named Nicotiana tabacum varieties. NB-11 won't be found among the ARS-GRIN accessions, or in any other national germ plasm bank. Only on this forum. That's also true of Chillard's White Angel Leaf.

Most likely it is an old Burley strain developed by Newton seed co. They labeled things that way. ie Newton Burley 11. The most productive strain of Burley I ever grew was NBH 98. (Newton Burley Hybrid 98) Too bad it is a male sterile variety and produces no seed. I don't know if Newton seed co is still around. For some reason I am thinking it was taken over by Workman Tobacco. But I could be wrong about that. ??

It's pretty common for commercial seed producers to label their varieties this way. The most productive bright leafs I ever grew were CC27, which is produced by Cross Creek Seed here in the US. (Cross Creek 27) And PVH2306 which is produced by Profigen in Brazil. (Profigen Variety Hybrid 2306). If you can find these seeds and want nothing but maximum production, get them. Tobaccoseed.co.uk used to have them and sold them as "Virgina Gold #1 & #2". You would have to email them and ask if they still have those specific strains. But they are also sterile and produce no seed.

The naming is from our very own Don (@FmGrowit). Here is the narrative on NB-11, directly from @Jack in NB this evening.

i do not know it's provevance - don't even know if it's a Burley. I got a selection of five from a member of I think HTGT about 2005. Growing out, I got I think 19 distinctly different plants, most were junk. But this one was exceptional - 16 or so large leaves, mild, very sturdy stalks - my best plant for leaf weight (this varied from year to year, but the top was about 125 g dry leaf per plant). Called it "G", the others were named from "A" to "S"
Don at this site was getting rolling with his seed bank, and I sent him some "G". He thought that was a very mundane title, and suggested instead "NB 11", as it came to him in 2011 from me in NB. Much classier!
Later on I got some Monte Calme Blanc, and the plant form and taste were similar to the NB11, but my plants were stronger, more vigorous and produced 15 - 20% more dry leaf per plant.

There you have it!
Thank you @Jack in NB. NB-11 is a new variety developed by agronomic selection. Its Market Class is undetermined. Its name is short for New Brunswick 2011.

Monte Calme Blanc??? I have never heard of it. Any details about it? Just curious, all Mount Calme strains come from Switzerland IIRC.

I have heard of it. I don't have it, but I have heard of it. Never heard of anything called Mont Calme Jaune
