Hello all! My name is Mike but I’m usually called Raven. I’ve been interested in including some tobacco plants in with my new garden this year. I have a few planter boxes in the back I’m planning on using that were used for a few different plants before. I removed the grass underneath and have a barrier membrane separating the ground soil from the soil I added into the boxes. They get full sun almost all day due to my placement and the location of my home. Im just wanting to know besides the normal spacing of the plants in the box and keeping them regularly watered and supported as they get taller, is there anything in particular I can prep for to make sure I don’t have any horrible beginner mistakes.

I know full and well I’ll make at least a few errors during my first attempts as I get the hang of it, and I have a large shed I’ll be using to cure in already that we don’t really use for anything. It’s tall enough to where I can suspend them and not interfere with normal use of the shed for the stuff we have in there.

Welcome to the forum. Be sure to read the New Growers' FAQ, and scan the topics in our Index of Key Forum Threads. Both are linked in the menu bar.

Do you already have seed? What varieties are you planning? What will be your use for them?

Welcome from New Orleans! I am new at this, too, and waiting for my second batch of seeds to arrive. The first ones never germinated so I am gonna give it one more go before I give up for this year. I have been rolling my own with bakky from Whole Leaf, and enjoying my smokes immensely, but I would like it even more with "free" tobacco I grew myself. Eventually I hope to be producing my own Connecticut Shade and Criollo 98 tobacco, enough to roll a couple hundred stogies every year. We'll see how that works out. Meanwhile what I am using is working just fine.
