This is still going to need some work, but this is what I've been working on for the past couple of days.

Here is the most updated list of seeds available. The highlighted names are the seeds that I need help doing grow-outs. If anyone has a seed source of less than three years and would like to donate them or if someone wants one of these varieties and is willing to donate seeds from their plants, it would be very helpful.

Many of these seeds have been donated (in original GRIN envelopes) and a lot of them have been donated in quantities which will make them available to everyone.

The highlighted names will be sent on a first come- first served basis. These seeds will be limited to about 100 seeds per request (maybe a few more depending on the variety.

Red Russian TC 588 PDF There's a long story behind this one. Basically, it's the oldest N.tabacum variety I can find in the data base. The name has changed and there is no information on it. Through a little bit of research, I've found it is a naturally occurring variety in South America, through Central America and into Mexico. Could very well be one of the original tobacco varieties. It's former name was Macrophylla Purpurea. It has been used in many experiments in crossing, but it is acknowledged as a true N. Tabacum.

Cuban (petite)

I'll be filling in the TI numbers and the names as I find them.

Member Hakam sent a generous number of his seeds from Egypt. The name is unknown, but he's sure it is an Oriental variety from Lebanon

I also have a lot of unknown varieties, mostly from internet purchases that were mixed when I got them. Some are quite unique and some aren't. I'll go back to my notes and try to add descriptions.

Shade type (mixed up varieties in “CT Shade Leaf”)
Type I
Type II
Type III
Type IV
Type V

A whole leaf customer sent me seeds from Florida from two plants. He said his cuban neighbor grows it every year and he grows “a field” of it and sells it to cigar companies. He was unable to get the names of the varieties. They were labeled 1 and 2

Phil from HTGT sent me some 1951 White Burley seeds that I was unable to germinate. There is a thread over at HTGT where someone joined just to comment on how to assist in the germination by introducing some kind of chemical. This person gave a very clear account of how to do it and she really sounded like she knew what she was talking about. If someone has time to research it, it might be worthwhile.

If I find any more donated seeds, I'll list them when I find them. If you have a contribution you'd like to add, send me a PM.

Thanks,
Don

Don, I just noticed you have Bursa listed as an urgent grow out need. I have seed from last year. I have not done a germination test on it but plant to grow another 50 plants this year. that will leave me quite a bit left over so let me know if you want it.

the list is indeed impressive,,,,

unfortunatlly, i only have room for a personal grow,,,,

but i am sending good vibes your way to,,, get the seed list 100% stocked,

edit> i may be able to do something in 5 gallon buckets on a strain or 2 off the list to help in seed stocking,

Does anyone have any idea how to download this information?...the whole database.
Don,
A GRIN application that runs on a PC, called GrinPC, is available for download:

http://www.ars-grin.gov/npgs/pcgrin.html

along with specific crop databases. It's really ancient stuff. The minimum hardware is an Intel 386 CPU! I've had it running with the tobacco database for almost a year. It is incredibly difficult to use, though it does have a downloadable user manual. The searching and reporting functions (within the creaky FoxPro runtime) are exasperating. It's biggest downside is that it does not contain the invaluable information to be found in the original accession documents (the pdf files). While these pdf files are freely downloadable, there are well over 200 volumes, each running about 40-60MB.

I do have the archived Nicotiana data and GrinPC. My opinion is that GrinPC is not worth the bother. It's so old that Bush was president when it was released. No, not that Bush...his father.
