Spring has sprung in the Far North of New Zealand and it’s time to start thinking about my summer Grow.
Eney meny miny mo,
Which seeds shall I sow?
Virginia Gold of course is first on the list. Cures nicely just hanging on the line and can be smoked straight away, if you’re in a hurry, otherwise flue curing is best. Mixing a little Yellow Twist Bud and a touch of Izmir makes a great smoke.
So here’s the plan.
Bright Leaf
Virginia Gold
Southern Beauty
Lizard Tail Orinoco
Yellow Gold
Burley
Yellow Twist Bud
Monte Calm Yellow
TN 86
Dark
Small Stalk Black Mammoth
Bolivian Criollo Black
Adonis
Orientals
Izmir Ozbas
Prilep
Cigar/Pipe
Amarello Rio Grande
Havana 608
Little Dutch
Others/ unclassified
Red Russian
Tennessee Red Leaf
Ornamentals
Jasmine
Only The Lonley
(For the Bugs)

Looks like a lot but I’m only going to plant three or four of all except for Virginia Gold and a couple of the Burley.
Let’s get sowing.
I use Peat pots and plant out pot and all. This way you don’t disturb the root system and I’ve never had a failure.
This is how I do it.
Take a small pill bottle, drill a small hole in the lid say 2.5mm it needs to be big enough for the seeds to fall through. (See pic 1)
Tip the seeds into the bottle and screw on the lid. Tip the bottle upside down over the area to be seeded and tap the bottom. (You can practice on a paper towel, see pic 2)
Don’t forget to label the bottle. I put my seeds in a small zip lock bag and store them in the bottle. If you don’t have zip lock bags you can put a piece of sticky tape over the hole. Using one bottle for each variety avoids any seed from the one you are using becoming mixed up with the next.
Label the pots and place in a suitable tray. Water from the bottom only. A quick spritz over the top helps everything get started. Never water from the top again.
Now we wait.

Thanks,
I knew that I'd catch someone out. Us Kiwis can count good when it comes to baccy and beer. I had a senior moment when posting it.
Have a closer look I'm only growing 20 varieties. I plan on planting the majority of my grow in varieties that I know I like and all the rest are to see if I like them.

Im growing a variety because i have never grown and im looking for different uses. Next year maybe grown some of the same to keep up inventory and a few others to check them out as well. In the meantime, im enslaved to commercially produced and overpriced products!

Get some seeds sown and get planted outside as soon as your climate permits. You're lucky to be where you can grow 2 crops.
In a year from now youll have 2 crops if experience under your belt. You can get planting beds laid out, soil improved and ready to go. You may need to even grow in pots depending on your soil. Important thing is to get started so you're ready to hit the ground running.

Bright Leaf, Burley, Dark, Orientals, Cigar/Pipe, Others/Unclassified Ornamentals. Were meant to be headings and I forget to put Harrow velvet on the list.
This pic was supposed to be at the top and I forgot it as well. IMG_20211005_113551.jpg My seed collection. All except for Virginia Gold purchased from NWS, great service, Thanks @skychaser.
Went for my bimonthly blood test today and it came back good so that's a bonus. The only problem I'm having at the moment is the lock down, it seems an infected person or persons breached the border illegally and came up North. These persons are refusing to co-operate and say where they had been so we have to stay in lock down. Means I can't get some of the things that I need as the shops are shut.
I just hope that it doesn't go on for to long. We are looking at Monday so the news said, we will see.

Thursday 14th, spent spraying, the wind got up at around 1 pm not too bad but enough to cause drift. Knocked off so as not to upset the natives, got back half of the section, including the baccy patch done so I’m happy chappy.

Hi all, back again.
Seeds are sprouting, but I need more jiffy pots and seed mix.

Stood my little Tractor up on its tail when I was coming down the ramp from the shed the other day. Spray tank came off as the ramp tipped up. Daunting Daughter and strapping Grandson arrived Friday night and we put it back together Saturday morning. No big drama, nobody was injured, nothing major was broken, twisted Sister got quite excited but that’s because she cares.

It's all good fun, been meaning to fix them for about 7yrs, but I'll probably not bother, it helps to keep life interesting. We in the North of New Zealand come out of lock down tomorrow night so I can get the stuff I need on Wednesday. Our weather here has turned really summer today with 26°c in my house and I had all my windows and sliding doors open. If it keeps going I will need to pull the curtains to shade my seedlings.

Been doing it since 1990. It's saved me a heap of $$$. Shame that I only found this forum a few years ago.

Thursday
Bit rainy today so I shredded some Virginia Gold.

Good job I got the grass cut and my spraying done yesterday. Seedlings are coming along nicely.
We have Labour weekend this weekend so I guess that daunting Daughter will be off home to do married stuff. Her Mountain appears to have a good cover of snow and she’s been itching to go snow boarding.

Still rainy and blowing like crazy. Ah well typical spring weather I guess. Seeds are peeking over the top of their pots and wondering where the Sun is. Temperature inside is 22°c and humidity is 73%, so except for the sunlight little plants are happy. Outside Temperature is 17°c, humidity is 97°%, that’ll teach me to make summer noises and getting short pants out.

These little baccy plant’s are determined to grow.
An old plastic meat tray that I use for filling the jiffy pots and sowing seed.

Seedlings are coming along nicely now and it’s time to do a little thinning. The waiting is boring. Never mind the end result will be worth it. Our weather here is a little bit up and down at the moment, on day hot and sunny the next warm and rainy.

Pic 3 is the very last Virginia Gold from my Winter grow. I just hung them in my house and left them alone. They went from green to yellow to the lovely golden brown.
It was pretty neat to watch as they went through the changes at their own pace. Almost a shame to smoke them, but the proof is in the pudding so they say.
