You are quite welcome for the FAQ. Many members contributed.

I'm afraid that the nearby palms may present a problem for the tobacco. If the soil drains well, I would suggest watering daily. If there is some way to rig a mirror to increase the sun exposure, that might help. If not, maybe some artificial light could help make up the deficit. Very bright indirect light is also good.

Re: Hello from Pacific!

Welcome to Fair Trade Tobacco.

Can I suggest you move all that to a grow blog?

Greetings!

So, thanks to you and the FAQ for beginning growers, I started a mini-crop in my mini-garden in Noumea city ^^

It's here:

NoumeaCity.jpg

6132333semainesnurserie.jpg

3 weeks nurserys after sparkling some seeds.

5063773semainespotsindiv.jpg

The 3 weeks plants in individuals pots.

2308906semainespots.jpg

6 weeks plants

7850186semainesterre.jpg

6 weeks plants on ground ^^, 8 planted

I will gift the 12 other plants to a friend in the mountains. They will probably have a better life and way more sun than theses ones I keep in my mini-garden, but it is a first test.

It's Little dutch, Little cuba, Ohio dutch, Paris Wrapper and Cuba-4 ^^ I will see how they grows. (I carefully noticed what and where in my book)

My small gardener has only like 2-3 hours of full sun every days, and it's nos accounting for the shade of coconuts/palms leaves. But tropical climate at least.

The soil is "a bit" rooted by the coconuts and the multipliant palms, it will be a hard battle for the tobacco. Let the better win!

Just hope the cats from my neightbour wont make a mess. They usually don't harm the plants (apart from the palm they think it was a shratching board), but...

Nice one! I knew BAT had an operation in Fiji, but I see the're not alone in the Pacific! Very keen to learn how your plants will grow!

Haha, thanks!

Just noticed a handy box to carry 12 young plants to the mountains:

That looks great! Maybe you shouldn't close it with the lit though. Might need a bit of ventilation. But the box itself is a perfect fit!

Haha, thanks, but the mountain garden it's not my garden (I have only the mini-one... :( ) : It's the garden of a friend I gifted the 12 remaining plants. She lost her husband 4 years ago in a disease, so, I do a little bit of garden and soil work in exchange of a good meal ^^. (and it was a pleasure to do, and I'm not the only one to help: Solidarity seem to works well here: I'm not a native from this Island, I arrived 4 years ago for a working opportunity ^^)

You did a good job helping someone and at the same time promoted tobacco growing. Although, as you pointed out yourself, the two-by-two are in real close proximity of one another. How much rainfal do you get at your place and how much rainfall in the mountains?

It the start of the "hot and moist" season here.

From the meteo website, I can expect 67in of rain/year, and 45% of theses (30inches) in december-mars season for about 80 degrees (Fahrenheit) on average (65 degree on night, and up to 95 on top of the day). In the "mountain", it's 5 degrees less on average.

She say she has "more rain than other places" and it's good because the sun and wind (almost perpetual wind here, not accounting for cyclones) here can burn the plants. She water often if too dry. (and not at all in "winter" because very moist, the forest start just behind his garden)

I'm not sure about the numbers because this island was cut in 2 by the main mountain range, and the east coast is extremely rainy, tropical, and green, when the west coast is more dry. (we are on the west coast).

I don't really know what to expect, it's a first try! ^^

Now, I hate cats. (paris wrapper rear in mini-garden)

I bet it's cats because it's the plant on theyr "escape path" when they see me, and some cats fur on the leaves. And it's perfectly cut.

Another "Paris Wrapper", but chewed this time. At first, I will blame cats too, but after a carefull investigation, find theses just at the limit of my Neighbour.

If you can get the transplants to survive a short time longer, snail and cricket and earwig damage will become minimal.
