June report

Thanks guys for all the comments.

Tobacco is in the ground for one and half month now. Different locations, different results. This year I found that a lot of my tobacco is under attack of disease or virus. I have to completely remove and replant the batch of Vuelta Abajo. I didn't hesitate. I just pull all the plants and start all over today.
It looks like this:

and new batch:

It happens almost the same at my sun grown filler field. From 150 plants only 55 are healthy. I'm very busy this year with house renovation, so I will not worry too much and I will have less work with collecting if any will left but I'm disappointed in other hand. So much work went into nothing. Maybe I start to early?...maybe soil needs to rest,...seeds???... something in the air??...

My wrapper Habano 2000 is komsi-komsa.

Stamm 161 survived and looks like this:

From three Stamm 161 I have put one in the container and it will open the first flower in few days. Bag is ready.

Izmir-Ozbas. Only one from ten plants is healthy. I hope I will collect seeds.

Peppers are doing great. Garlic starts to turn yellow. I try first raspberry yesterday. Delicious. In general... good season so far.
Good luck to you to ...

August update

I come back from holidays and a lot of work was waiting on me.
before I left I toped the plants and scene was really nice:

corojopodlipa.jpg

This is my sun grown cigar filler Corojo 99. About 50 plants from 150 was looking like this. Healthy.
When I come back situation was a bit different:

corojopodlipa1.jpg

I colect about 250 volado leaves. 100 really nice. I pull out some plants which didn't promise good.
There was a lot of weeds. I clean a bit. Day temperatures are really high for last month and I woke at 5 o'clock if I want to do something at the field.
When I was at the coast morning temperatures or lovest was 29 Celsius to 31 C.(84F-88F) for two weeks. Highest temperatures measured in Croatian history for such a long period.
Also in Ljubljana was hot but there was rain for four days and temperatures went down to 14 deg.C.(57F). Now is dry again and hot. I believe that this is good for my tobacco which is left.

I'm very disappointed with Habano 2000 wrapper and I found that there are at least three different varieties. Seek. Less than 10 % is good.
Why the hell I didn't grow Florida Sumatra or Machu Picchu from my seeds?

This is the other view.

Re: Rainmax 2015 season 4

You have some good looking plants Maks. Sorry the wrapper is below expectation. Remember we as home growers are not limited. Cure the ugly "wrapper" for filler and binder. Harvest some of the filler leaves that are nicest a little early, they will cure thin, and can be used for nice wrapper. Any variety can be used for any purpose depending on when it is harvested and how it is handled during curing.

The bottom photo of tobacco looks like about 2 weeks of suckers. But I see quite a bit of good leaf in there.

Re: Rainmax 2015 season 4

I didn't even finished my grow blog from 2015 so I decided to write it here if something comes on my mind.
This year I will only grow one strain of cigar tobacco.
Which one I don't know yet....

I prepared Corojo99, Florida Sumatra and Besuki.
I will start soon. Probably Corojo.
If something goes wrong I have other strain...

Soil at my garden need some rest. No tobacco there.
I planted some garlic, peas, beans,...

Good luck.

Maks,
In my experience, neither FL Sumatra nor Besuki make good filler (maybe the top leaf). The Corojo99 should provide wrapper, binder and filler. I vote for the Cuban.

Re: Rainmax 2015 season 4

Your tobacco looks like it's doing well.

The curled scape on your garlic is how I was able to distinguish my Anka garlic, which is a hard neck, from my Czech Broadleaf, is a soft neck, and produces no scape. Although the Czech is generally larger (broader leaves and larger heads), some of the smaller Czech looked similar to the Anka where the two plantings were adjacent.

I'm eager to savor the Anka, once it has dried.

Re: Rainmax 2015 season 4

My garlic is not ready yet to colect. I will cook those flowers. I love them in soup or as side dish with some meat or in sauce.
After colecting flowers of hard neck garlic this starts making bigger heads in soil. I will colect it in the midle of July I believe or when botom leaves start yellowing.

Re: Rainmax 2015 season 4

In the US, it is popular to pickle garlic scapes, although I did not do that. My bottom leaves of Anka had begun to yellow in early June. Next year, I will let them stay in the ground a few weeks longer, and I will save the scapes to cook as a vegetable. Many of the heads are ~1-1/2" across (3.75 cm).

Yes, you pick it early this year. I dig few garlic out and it needs one more month in the ground.
I hope for good season.

First priming

2016-07-22 11.32.29.jpg I have cleaned all mud lugs. Pull out more than fourthy infected plants so far. Lots of rain lately and heavy wet soil is not good for tobacco roots. I also have some brown spots on leaves.
Hoeing and weeding for the last time this year.

corojo.jpg In the end of the week I will cut the heads at 14th leaf and than it begins battle with sucers. Hope weather will alow it to collect some nice leaves.

About my garlic. Also collect half of it today and another half tomorow or this days..
I found funny mutation or whatever this might be:

2016-07-24 20.22.06.jpgHead was empty...

2016-07-24 20.20.23.jpg ...but stem wasn't.
