Tabacos Brasileiros 1977 Photos
Exclusive to Fair Trade Tobacco Forum
During the summer of 1977, I requested information from a number of cigar tobacco manufacturers throughout the world. Most responded with a cigar shape chart and a price list. The manager of Tabacos Brasileiros Ltda. in Blumenau, Santa Catarina, Brazil graciously sent me ten 8"x10" photos that he shot specifically in response to my request. They have been tucked away in a box for the past 38 years. I finally located them again last week. Each has now been scanned into digital format, and compiled onto a CD. Each original photo had a pencil inscribed caption on the reverse.
I've included the cover envelope, to document their provenance.
Plantation of a small tobacco farmer.
Farm with a flue-curing barn [tall building] and an air-curing barn [to right].
Delivery to the factory.
Building a fermentation pile.
Fermentation piles.
Temperature checking. [Note the thermocouple wire in his hand, and the openings to tubes for inserting the probe.]
Temperatures are checked and recorded daily.
Grading after fermentation.
Packing graded tobacco.
Ready packed bale.
