Here's a link to just one twisted concoction written by yet another misinformed "journalist" placing the blame on "Big Tobacco"

http://rense.com/health/tobac.htm

I learned the truth about this the other day while in North Carolina. Although I'm armed with the truth, I'm having a tough time finding the actual directive.

President Jimmy Carter through the USDA instructed the University of North Carolina to develop a tobacco strain with lower tar. The unintended result was an astronomic spike in nicotine production. This variety became known as Y-1. It was never intended to be put into production, but some of the seeds where smuggled into Brazil where it was grown commercially.

The offending parties (smugglers) where both prosecuted and imprisoned for a short time.

As Paul Harvey would say...and now you know the rest of the story.

He's right about lower tar tho, idea was to get a full flavored cig in a light smoke. An admirable idea if they bothered to look into the truth behind it at all. And I think that astronomical number was like 5% lol, right in there with run of the mill burley

For a bit the plantana I have is what I thought y1 was, but the dates don't work out. Just another 5% flue cured. It's amazing the buzz behind something that really isn't so special, half the work that went into y1 was in ensuring it produced sterile seed. At 5% its just politics that make it so interesting

In one year my cigarette consumption has dropped from 10 t0 6 packs a week from smoking wholeleaf home processed. Go figure. Now add at least 1 home rolled cigar a day to that. When you grow and roll your own you can adjust nicotene to your own needs simply by position of the leaf on the plant to smoke. Does that make sense? It seems to work for me. When it gets to technical into strains i'm a complete novice. The powers of observation from experience work best for me.
