This is a curious article. By messing with a single gene, researchers have developed tobacco plants (for biomass fuel) that never blossom, and continue growing forever. The stalks on these plants are 10 cm (~6.25") in diameter!

I don't know how this would smoke. Those plants are currently 8 years old, and over 18' tall.

Giant tobacco plants that stay young forever

Maybe it will interest some of us, although it's not strictly have something to grow tobacco. But hey it's tobacco!

"..Tobacco plants bloom when they are just a few months old – and then they die. Now, researchers have located a genetic switch which can keep the plants young for years and which permits unbounded growth. In short, an ideal source of biomass."

If they have their way NO tobacco will be able to naturally reproduce. Then farmers will need to buy starts. This is already done with corn and other plants. Once they figure out how to "infect" the odd gardens to clean up the loose ends perhaps nothing will grow without paying the "owners". Far fetched ... yes, but this IS what they are working towards and they are getting one step closer every day.

There are already some strains where 60% of the work went into making the plant sterile, y1 (if I remember name right) comes to mind
