This otherwise boring study suggests why "traditional" methods become traditional. Likewise one might assume that any approach that seems more innovative will eventually fall into the same "traditional" trap.

"Their findings, published in Communications Psychology, suggest that when making sequential decisions (i.e., when asked to make a series of choices back-to-back), humans often tend to repeat familiar actions, even if alternative ones would yield greater rewards."

The wisest approach, though most of us will be unlikely to choose it, would be to always assume that there is a better way to do what we are currently doing.

Sometimes traditions are beneficial. A quote by (or at least attributed to) Donald Kingsbury gives a possible benefit:

"Tradition is a set of solutions for which we have forgotten the problems. Throw away the solution and you get the problem back. Sometimes the problem has mutated or disappeared. Often it is still there as strong as it ever was."
