Turning Tobacco into Hookah smoke-able

I've seem some the herb bricks that some friends of mine used to smoke on the hookah but seeing this I'm wondering how one turns tobacco leaf matter into something that can be smoked on a hookah. Any videos or step by step to the process would be a great help.

Also the friends used to put things like kool-aid instead of water in the hookah and said ti flavored everything. Anyone tried anything like that?
