just curious what the best method for storage of air cured leaf is, I have seen people use ziplock bags with a mist of distilled water is this the best way until you decide kiln or decide on a fermentation method?

I keep them in thick resealable poly bags from the shipper supply store. Much thicker than a zip lock. Aaand, I keep these bags in a wood cabinet in the shade, outside. Alternatively, I keep it in 5 gallon buckets.

I air-cure my leaf in an unheated, ventilated shed, and I just leave them in the shed through the winter, or until I bring into the garage to kiln-ferment, or to use the kiln to bring them back into case to shred & smoke. Once they're cured, it doesn't hurt the leaf to go in-and-out of case, get frozen, whatever, and you can further process as time permits. During the cooler-fall and cold winter, the humidity is never high enough that I need to worry about mold.
With a 4-6 week kiln-ferment process, it may take me into spring before I get all the crop ferment-aged.
Then, I'll de-stem & store the ferment-aged leaf in WLT plastic bags until I blend the different strains, shred, roll & smoke.

Currently, I've started using my kiln to flue-cure the bright leaf strains. Pick leaf as they ripen, flue-cure, bring back to proper storage case, de-stem, then store in WLT bags until ready to blend, shred, roll, smoke.

China,
Is there a particular reason you keep it stored outside? Does it stay outside year round?

I think it depends on your local weather.
I have to take all my leaves in the house before november, or it moulds in a few days, even in the driest parts of my sheds/garage. I wish I could let it outside... but I simply cannot.

Inside is almost always more dry than outside in Alberta and storing it inside only works in perfectly sealed buckets. Outside gives me several months of being frozen, but is much more easy to maintain in case.

What is the consensus on the humble cardboard box for long term storage? I like it so the residual moisture can leave. Plus they're free for the taking.

I use cardboard boxes. I'm just smoking some leaf which has been in the basement for two years, no kilning. It's pretty good but another year and it will be perfect.

I find that today’s cardboard boxes have a distinct formaldehyde odor that I hate and do not want to infuse into my tobacco during long term storage.

I age my leaves (aftet kilning) in plastic bags which are stored in cardoard boxes (it helps maintaining temperature and humidity).
