Have one seedling that has gone rogue on me. The first "leaves" have taken on lives of their own........anyone seen this before?

Don't mind the apparent yellow leaves, they are very green, combonation of bad light and flash on camera.

If I had that going on, get rid of it as soon as possible. It could be nutrient, bacterial, fungal or viral contamination, not necessarily a rogue seedling.

I agree with Joe pluck it out, it maybe a weed still in the compost. Best get rid before it sets down too many roots.

Definitely not a weed. This guy looked just like the others when the first leaves appeared, then the leaves started growing out into "runners". They were started in a bulk tray and individually planted into the cells. All growing conditions identical.

Genetic mutations aren't all that unusual. I doubt it carries any threat of contamination to the other plants, but I also doubt it will survive .

Who knows? White Burley was a genetic mutation, not its offspring are just about the only Burleys grown.

It aint eatin much... let it grow............ Maybe it will be a mutant that will develop runners like strawberries and all we would have to do is plant one to an acre :)

Maybe a new "vine tobacco", one of the long leaf stems has sprouted a new leaf midway this week. Will probably container plant this one just to see what happens. Will get a new pic up later.

Those seedlings don't look very healthy even though you say they are green. The shape of the leaf is tellin me either too much water or lack or aeration(compacted mix)maybe?

The best starting/ potting mix i've used is Stein's Premium potting mix.The plant love it all the way to patch.

I would just pull the weed or pot it in good mix and see what it becomes.I'm guessin quakgrass.

The leaves do seem to be not coming in pairs................. Or rather the leaves are round like the first pair is. I am only familiar with one strain really so dont go by me.

Just remember that Rogue Seedling is now a soap opera star. He has fans. Viewers expect Rogue. Don't cut him from the show! Allow us to follow him for the season. So what, if he's an ugly duckling. He may turn out to be a Shasta Daisy.

Thanks bob. When he was planted in his cell he was one of the healthiest sprouts in the seed tray and looked identical to all the others. Since no one seems familiar with this"mutation" I will simply transplant him to his own growing space and see what happens.

The little mutant still has a mind of his own.

From the middle of one of the leaf stems, out comes a new leaf in the last few days, from a spot that was bare and smooth. There appears to be no central "bud" from which each leaf grows. I do not have any expectations for this little guy, but if nothing else it will be interesting watching him through his growth cycle.

I agree. The seedlings should be bigger and bushier at that stage. Something isn't quite right.

The mystery plant doesn't look like Quack grass. I don't know what it is. I got one rouge plant in a flat this year too. I use a special sterilized starting mix I buy from a local nursery so I doubt it's a weed. And it doesn't look like any weed I know. Usually I would just pull it but this one has got me curious. So I re-potted it and am letting it grow to see what it turns into.

Sky, feel free to throw in a pic of yours as it progresses too. We can gather all the mutants in one place.

I read somewhere that "gas filled" windows block a measure of natural light, so maybe that is my culprit. Weather has been too up and down to get them outside yet. We were in the 30s last night.

Yours looks more like a tobacco than mine does. The first two pairs of leaves looked like tobacco but the next pair are to long and are a bit serrated. I dunno what it is. Maybe its a mutant dandelion. ?? Hell, maybe it's a shasta daisy. lol I like those. :)
