My apologies. I was not aware that there was only one valid opinion and others were subject to ridicule. Won't happen again.
Gosh!

As I've written many times, blowing out the residual smoke from a cigar, when you know that you will be letting it go out is a helpful procedure. I try not to allow my cigars to go out, since, to me, they are still more harsh after relighting, regardless. Smoking a cigar is a very simple thing. The Dutchman was following the Cigar Aficionado approach of suggesting that cigar smoking is a complicated (perhaps even sophisticated) matter.

Just like salting one's grits, or wiping one's butt, each of us has figured out how to accomplish it.

Every now and then, I post something as though I were an actual forum member, without examining it in all its possible misinterpretations. So please accept my apology. Likely to happen again.

going to add to this thread. I dont know why while smoking a pipe or cigar guys dont inhale every time? why ? when a leaf is cured then fermented the nicotine level goes down. when smoking a cigar I get more of a buzz than a cigarette but thats why i go after the bigger prize.
Besides what JBD said, the other reason no one inhales every puff of a cigar is that a cigar has a much tobacco as 7-12 cigarettes.

when I smoke a pipe, I inhale one out of every four or five puffs. I find good pipe tobacco to be smooth enough to inhale, but not cigars. Too harsh.

He was being sarcastic.

His comment was a spontaneous reaction to learning how after 40 years of smoking cigars, he doesn't know how to smoke a cigar.

My favorite cigars have been made from tobacco that is NEVER used in cigar manufacturing, but I don't smoke cigars, so I can't have a valid opinion. I guess if I smoked cigars, I would know how bad my favorite cigars really are...,but until I know that.....I'll just keep enjoying them.

Oh yeah...I don't know how to smoke cigars either.
What varieties do you use in a cigar, Don? I was thinking of making some unorthodox ones.

One of my favorites is a puro American grown Bursa. Another is Yellow Twist Bud (Burley). Both are highly unorthodox, but are probably the closest to what the early European explorers encountered when they first arrived here.

Offense must be a very valuable item. Nearly no one ever intentionally gives offense. Yet everyone and his brother in law's dog is constantly turning over every pea gravel pebble looking for any pretext to take the slightest trace of offense. Must be some kinda wunnerful stuff I guess.

Me, I always figured, if you don't like offense don't take it.

Meanwhile, back to the subject at hand:

Yes, I'll suck a couple taps to get the fire up and going if I've let the stick set a long while. Not every time. But there's ash on the front end. I don't construe how you blow there. That end belongs to fire; this end belongs to me. Sides, I want to keep my ash undisturbed, cause that's what banks the fire. That's why I'm a sucker and not a blower.

Wonder how my old aboriginal Blackfoot squaw great grandma did it when she rolled up some kinnickinnick on her thigh, up there on the cold Northern plains? No Miss Manners in sight, poor unbenighted heathen.

Heck of a thing. My own great grandma and I can't even remember her name right this moment.

I think everyone could get carried away if they followed the "proper" way to smoke a cigar...people that have 100s to spend on each cigar feal the need to turn it into their own special ritual. ..I think if your enjoying the way u smoke them..without all the cigar etiquette. .keep doing it your way...I can see how purging could help before each puff if you tend to smoke your cigars down quite low..they can get hot towards the end.and when putting them out to smoke later..any stale smokes never good..and will usually make you cough..if theres to much of it...but I wouldn't listen to much to what any full of s@#$ dutchman has to add..no offence

Alright, I sacrificed for the greater good of the members of FTT. I have smoked many cigars over the past 2 weeks (sheesh, it's been hard :)). It seems this way of smoking does indeed make a difference. I noticed a smoother, cooler smoke with less smoke flavor and more tobacco flavor. I don't see anything wrong with blowing out after every hit, as long as you don't mind losing a bit of your tobacco-ey goodness.

I say "Phooey" on all of this.

There are as many smoking styles as there are people. So either everyone is doing it right or everyone is doing it wrong.

Whatever works for you is the way you should do it...and piss on anyone who tells you "you're doing it wrong"
