Well, it’s been a while. I see some blogs from members I haven’t seen in a good long time and stepping back into the group feels like coming home. Knucklehead, deluxe stogie, China voodoo.., good to see you’re still at it.
As you may or may not know, we moved in fall of 2020 to our new location at 93 mile onto 93 mile loop road here in BC. Where we were once at sea level, we’re now close to 4,000 feet higher and slightly further north. What does this mean for our grow? Well, the nice thing is we can start early under lights and most of the leaf harvesting can be done before the first frosts. Our last frost is usually around end of May and first frost around the first of September. We also get about 3 1/2’ or more of snow which isn’t completely gone until sometime in May.
Challenging to be sure. I did try a grow in the summer of 2021 but a wildfire moving our way kind of interrupted the watering of the seedlings and they succumbed to the killer sun heat.
Currently, I’m doing a test for germination since the the great seed grow out of 2016 was a while ago. Obviously quite a few of the seeds were still viable 2 years ago but I think it’s high time for another seed grow out particularly of the more important seeds to me.
In going through the seed collection, it’s like going through memory lane. The prilep from rainmax, red Russian from mad house, bursa from markw, pa-swarr from deluxe stogie, Greenwood from Lakota, k326 from knucklehead…etc. Too many to list.
Anyway, I reckon I’m going to grow this year and it’s good to be back.

Don't forget your signature burley variety:

First round of 46 germination testing done. One batch was a dud (I’ll find out what variety that is when match the numbers to the name) but for the most part, the seeds are still quite viable.
Nevertheless, I think for my peace of mind, I better do another seed grow out this year (at least of the very important varieties). Here’s a photo of one of the tests after day 5.

Here’s a list of the first test. 46 in total. The check marks denote how far along in germination they were (3 = green leaf already while 1= having just been sprouted) after 5 days. X’s mean unviable or partly unviable if accompanied by a checkmark.
Unfortunately, the nevrokop 5 didn’t seem viable at all… however, I still have some original source material that was given to me from knucklehead and I’ll try that out at a time when I can start my grow.
Needless to say, there’s quite a bit of viable seed still. You’ll notice that there’s no flue cured varieties on this list and that because I didn’t have room. I am starting a test on another 46 varieties today.
NOTE: #44 ‘Haronova’ is in a group of Eastern Europe orientals. It’s actually a burley variety and a very good one too.

Oh boy, oh boy oh boy. I got a winner seed.
Almost ten years ago during the great seed exchange, Lakota had sent me more seed than I could imagine. Amongst that seed was the N7371 which turned out to be one of my favourite burley varieties. However, after the great grow out of 2014 (or was 15?), the seeds might not have dried enough when I put them in the baggy. Anyway, what ever happened to them, their viability was pretty much non existent. In fact, in years past, I’ve tried several times to get them to germinate.
Well today I finally have one, and I’m going to plant that som of a Tobacco plant. 55ED48AC-E187-4AC8-8B09-B7A441D43C8C.jpeg

Will, the second round of testing is complete. All but one were completely viable.
Two ergo varieties were tested and one of those was the unviable one. At least I have another ergo to draw from.
… and remember that nevrocop 5 that wasn’t viable in the first test group? Well, a second pack of nevrocop was viable so all’s great.
Getting ready for the third round of tests.
Here’s some pics of the second testing germination…
