The nicotianaproject.net website is down (domain name expired) today. I don't know if it's temporary. I've emailed Doug about it.

The last time I got an email from Doug he told me he was going to change servers. He said that it would be back up and running as soon as possible. I am not sure if that is the case, I think he has been down a few days now.

Don;
When it was curing it smelt like fine cigar. They listed it as pipe and cigar tobacco Did you try the sample i sent you? Thought you woud be a better judge of what it was than I.

Dan, in you opinion, what class does this variety best fit. If anyone else has grown and processed this variety, please offer your opinion.

s we've seen before, this is one of the problems with buying from commercial internet shops. Cuban petite exists nowhere else in the world other than on the above site. I suspect it is yet another fictitious name. Criollo 98 is a recently developed hybrid cigar wrapper (shade grown) or filler (sun grown). Since real Criollo 98 is a hybrid, I'm suspicious of it's viability. I'm actually much more suspicious of its authenticity...not of the donor, but of the supplier of the seed.

Injun, was this a green stem or white stem type?

Got a hold of a different variety on eBay today called Krumovgrad and is from Bulgaria.
I'll ship some over as soon as I get them here to Sweden.

I beleive this seed bank is on the verge of becomming unmanageable.... it's HUGE!
I guess it could be worse, GRIN could call up one day and offer to donate their entire stock...:)

Worse than that, they might start up again some day and have to call Don for seed.

God what a payback that'd be. I'd give a pretty to see that.

Seriously for a moment folks --- Besides the logistic problems there is also a provenance problem. GRIN faced it (badly at times it seems) and so will we. How can we be SURE that ABC seeds are really ABC? most folks are honest and try hard but mistakes happen and in this case might get propagated. Are really qualified (as a group or individually) to say a seed IS what is claimed? I know I'm not.

You make good points! The point I'd like to make is that most of us are hobbyists, some take this issue more seriously than others. Last year was my first year growing anything. Thank's to Don for giving me seed for Black Sea Samsun, Ottoman, Ottoman HY and Yellow Twist Bud, I ended up buying some more. All I really know is what was written on the package, I have no reason to doubt it. If I was going to be picking nits, I have no reason to believe it either. If I returned seed to the seed bank and I say that they were bagged seed from a plant that came from seed that was from a package that was labeled Black Sea Samsun. Would you believe me? My choice of a seed producing plant might make a difference someday, but probably not soon. I enjoy my tobacco that I know as Black Sea Samsun and I thank whoever put the seed in the seed bank that made it's way to me.

The seed list is very impressive and getting bigger. If I can find more varieties that I enjoy, I'm thankful to have access to it. What their history is I don't know 100%, If I enjoy it, that's everything. If GRIN came back with an open hand, I'd give them a penny for their thoughts.

All seeds donated to the seed bank are identified by (besides the obvious) crop year and name of donor.

After BS'ing with the same people over the years, you kind of get to know them. I don't eliminate any donations, but the first seed I distribute are from the people I know and trust most.

OK I guess I'll do the same. Grow/buy what I like and never give anybody any seed that isn't pure, bagged seed grown from other seed and list it's source to me.

Sounds like a good policy! If we do the best we can, who can argue?

I count 161 distinct seed varieties in the FTT seed bank (this includes a few duplicate varieties from different sources). Congratulations to all the forum members.

Although the ARS-GRIN held seed for over 2000 varieties of tobacco, those 161 in the FTT seed bank represent a large majority of what home growers are looking for. We're still missing some treasures, but what we have is truly amazing.

Xanthi Yaka is Yenidje.

A list of missing treasures is a wonderful idea. In a new thread, members should propose varieties that they would like to see. It's clear that we are missing many Turkish, Bulgarian, Macedonian and Hungarian varieties.

Bob

I've got a bunch of learning to do! It was late for me yesterday, it took me a while to remember Southern Beauty wasn't on the list either. I went back to edit the post up to six. When I return the seed, should it be marked Xanthi Yaka or Yenidje? Yenidje is on the label.
