Squirrels are not only tasty and very healthy meat, but they have produced to the point of nuisance where I live - they ruin gardens, dig holes that horses stumble in (often breaking their legs... and I certainly value horses over squirrels), they are quite aggressive often negatively impacting other, endanger species and if you "cull the herd" you lessen the chances of rabies and other diseases decimating the population. I'm half French (where squirrel is considered a delicacy that sells of up to $50 a pound), so that may explain my tastes. But, think about it. If you were a wild animal, would you rather get old an injured, die of starvation, disease, be torn apart by dogs, hawks, foxes, etc, or die almost instantly from a hunter's bullet? Old age is not a pleasant state in the wild.
