Leaf of every variety will ferment to a lighter color for leaves lower on the stalk, and darker for leaves higher on the stalk, regardless of the duration of fermentation. Some varieties are naturally much darker than others. There is a lot of incorrect myth in the famous-smoke.com article. Try reading the "Cigars" section of the WLT Wiki.
