I got one also opening day bow season. 9-27, here. A mature Doe hanging with a young 6 point buck. My first shot at an animal with a bow in 15 years. Archery season in some counties in Texas allows you to take 2 doe's, and 4 days over thanksgiving holidays during general., So pick up your bow and put some meat in the freezer. I got a hog the week before ..
The buck never knew I was there and freaked out when the doe ran off. I sat and waited and he got curios and went to find her. 10 minutes later I kept hearing serious stomping about 30 -40 yds. away and then the buck went ballistic and running all around snorting and stamping very loud within 10 yds of me. I knew then I didn't wound the animal.
I keep an old water tank smoker just for that! I Made 2-1 pork venison pan sausage while I was processing the hog, with a front quarter and belly, and neck from the deer. About 20 lbs + another 30lbs ground unseasoned pork. I let my meat set in an iced down cooler for several days before processesing. This first deer will get ground for unseasoned hamburger and jerky for certain hind quarter cuts.
I am letting my spot rest till my son in law gets here to visit mid october. He is a first timer bow hunter. Them Whitetais are highstrung like a steel guitar. They will jump at the sound of a bowstring releasing an arrow. They shoudn't get to nervous till the guns start going off, just watch your scent!
Well at least some of your family is enjoying it. I am independtly employed and unemployed.Depending on how picky I want to be. Right now I choose employ. So I sympathise with you. My deadlines cut into my hunting, but I tell people I am going to hunt, so we stucture things to work.
