For many years now, I check daily for new images downloaded from Mars Perseverance Rover and from Mars Curiosity Rover. Today (Jan 10, 2025), I noted that neither site had updated its images since January 7. Then it dawned on me that both of these Mars rovers are controlled and managed through NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) in Pasadena, California. JPL sits atop a mountain in Pasadena. The Eaton Fire raced up its slopes.
Firefighters and aircraft labored heroically to keep the fires from reaching the JPL, a national treasure. They succeeded. JPL avoided fire damage, but 150 members of the JPL staff lost their homes in the fire. JPL will remain closed for another week, though essential personnel will work remotely for the time being.
