I drink half a glass of water per cart load. One glass per two carts. I have one beer in the morning when the muscle sugars feel slow to replenish between loads then more water. One in the afternoon. I sweat it all out before any other effects take hold. I take muscle/tissue salts during the day and before bed at night. So far no cramps or pains next day.

Oh and I missed getting photos before sunset is updates tomorrow. But the mail came today and it is official, I am going to be a pepper head. My Golden Greeks arrived!

My Jalapenos (green) and Chipotles (ripe + pecan wood smoker) are still on the way with my larger order of veggies.

I don't think I shared the documentary with the FTTF folks here?

I don't know if folks will watch an hour plus documentary? I still need to get a link to it in YouTube so you all don't need to buy the DVD to learn what I am doing.

I do have a thirty minute quick tour YouTube video of someone applying a few of the principles but not the whole enchilada.

Link: Here is a sneak peek video

Out early to finish the last 25% of truck four and the leftover logs.

As you can see where all the covering on the ground was scraped off and sold before building the house on the remaining poor soil there is a big erosion and drainage problem.

3766C8F2-61BA-413F-A06F-C9B261AC5904.jpeg

This is going to be the very last year I see these problems at this property. Erosion and flooded anaerobic clay soil will be a thing of the past. There is a huge problem with clay soils shrinking in the summertime become hard as cement and cracking like the surface of some alien planet. As a result it is never IF but WHEN your homes cement foundation will crack and need costly repairs. This problem will also be completely eliminated once I have the foundation surrounded and the soil moisture levels stabilized and remaining constant year round.

You can see that from this full truck load more than 10 cart loads of woodchips were needed to stabilize the ground. Everywhere a rut in the clay formed I took handbills of chips and threw them into the ruts as they formed. Guess who will win this battle in the end.

One nights rain eroded the entire section of compost layer on the soil in this one section. The barrier sheeting captured it and prevent it washing away and being lost. Once this area is buried under a woodchips their will be thousands of chips of all sizes redirecting the flow or water slowing it down reducing its erosive power and spreading the moisture in a fan shape throughout the woodchips bed.

Lots more woodchips needed to be spread in the middle of the backyard which was a soggy swamp by this time.

240 pounds of 46-0-0 arrived ready to kickstart the woodchips and push it faster through the initial lag phase of year 1 on the ground. None of this will be wasted, the rain will wash the nitrogen onto billions of woodchips all eager sponges that will soak up chemicals and salts nothing will make it into the groundwater. Mushrooms will bind the salts organically rendering them inert the same way they bind toxins in Eucalyptus, Walnut, and Cedar. There is no bad species of tree woodchips in this method.

Hügelkultur bed is really growing. I could afford to make it another row of logs wide.

More than 1/3rd of this backyard project is completed. Feels good.

Once the backyard is done I then start on the front yard!

Of course when it comes to an entire nation getting behind the principles, China so far has put all to shame.

“If we understand how the natural evolutionary process work, and we emulate those and we don't disturb those by our behaviors we can live in the Garden of Eden” John D. Liu

I would like to thank John D. Liu for that quote because that leads into my documentary on the technique I am applying at this Texas location.

Use this link so you don't have to buy the DVD but you can start to learn the principles behind the method.

Edit: as you watch this documentary keep in mind that other than to get the initial seeds to sprout, nothing in this garden is ever watered once.

My next door neighbor came over and said in all the years she has lived here there have been no bumblebees no dragonflies and hardly any birds in this estate. She has seen more species of dragonflies, bumblebees, etc in the past three days hanging around my property than all the years before. I also have frogs now in the backyard and lizards and countless hover flies, black soldier flies (one of my favorites) in just the past three days alone.

I explained the system and now when I do the front yard she wants me to do woodchips all the way over to her property as well. Only one neighbor to go.

All life is welcome here. Life is good!

Remember when eggplants looked like eggs, Pepperidge farms... well maybe not, these should be Japanese if memory serves me right. No bitterness and a ritch and creamy flavor. No more big black Italian bitter eggplants growing for a bit as they are the only vegetable my kids won't eat. My kids fight each other for the most brussels sprouts etc. So now to try actual egg sized eggplants to convert them.

The Devil Plant (Solanum capsicoides) is a native of South America and grows as a perennial bush or small tree up to 3m high. the botanical name Solanum aculeatissimum is used to describe Solanum capsicoides, which also goes under the names of Cockroach berry, Indian Love Apple, Soda Apple, Devils Apple and Devil Plant.

You can graft eggplants and tomatoes onto the same devil plant root stock and create an Eggplant and Tomatoes tree! Doesn't that blow your mind.

Edit: Devil’s fig (Solanum torvum), commonly known as turkey berry, prickly nightshade, or wild eggplant and the Giant Devil Fig (Solanum chrysotrichum) are also tried and tested grafting root stock.

Truck five is completely finished. Truck six request has just been posted. I am halfway there as far as the backyard goes. Frogs are coming in from neighboring properties. I may need to put in a pond for them along with mosquito eating fish.

Life is good!

Backyard halfway done. Most importantly I can still access my drum smoker.

136 cubic yards in the backyard needing first year lag phase what is a person to do in the meantime?

Organic compost in place container gardening that's what! Faced with the prospect or a year of lag before the nitrogen system gives positive returns once again I am putting my hoard of coffee grounds and other scraps to use.

$5 18-gallon plastic storage totes from walmart. 1/4 inch holes drilled a few inches above the bottom of the containers retains water for bottom up wicking and drains excess safely if totes left on ground directly tree roots will invade the drain holes. This way roots trying to get to holes will naturally air prune.

Lids cut in preparation for the application of Tulle, a synthetic wedding veil like fabric. It repels insects, birds, and even rodents whose claws end up sticking and grabbing in the material and freaks them out and they try to immediately escape.

4 bolts will get you a lifetime supply at just over $8 a bolt, shipping included. Each bolt is 54" wide and 120 feet long (40 yards)

Store on ebay

Emerald green blends into garden or Red if you wrap melons or gourds and want to easily spot them. Wrap seed heads, drape over fruit, tie a necktie around papaya trunks, tie up delicate stems to a structure, the uses are endless. Never throw away as there is plenty of reuses in the garden for old Tulle.

1B17634C-D241-46BD-A94A-5574C107EA39.jpeg

Everyone gets one, kids and mom included.

Lasagna stack brown and greens. I will do woodchips to the drain holes then greens, lawn clippings since I don't spray poisons on my lawn, then shredded paper, cardboard, any non glossy color junk mail, used coffee grounds and then kitchen scraps including bones an if you ask yes you can add meat. Then if you don't have good compost you don't worry buy the cheapest potting mix from the big box store, the compost soil you will make composting in place in the tote will end up superior to any bag at the store.

Then plant your seeds directly in the mix and water. Yes do not wait for any composting to start you can plant immediately in the mix. If you don't plant be sure to still water as you are feeding the microbes and when you do plant it will be better.

I cover the top of the mix in woodchips to prevent UV radiation sterilizing the top of the soil mix after the seeds have sprouted.

Tulle is glued or zip tied to the lid. The Tulle lid protects the seeds while they germinate from birds, rodents an insects. After sprouting the Tulle lid continues to protect the seedlings as they grow larger.

When the plants are large enough remove the lid and store in a safe place for the next time you need the lids.

If you want continued protection you can place stakes in each corner of the tote. Then wrap Tulle around the stakes creating an enclosure tent around your growing container.

If you don't like to bend over simply place the tote on a plastic chair or an object of similar height and you can container garden while standing with no bending over.

Now, can I be happy with just five containers to garden in, that is the question ;)

Life is good!

Edit: For those placing containers on chairs you can have a bottom drainage hole and place a bucket underneath. This captures the microbe rich compost tea and you can add water to it if needed and scoop it up and pour it back into the same tote continuously cycling nutrients throughout the tote system.

Correction: After coffee, I read and noticed that the Tulle color Emerald was posted incorrectly. You want the darker greens if you want visually Tulle to disappear. Hunter Green would disappear more than Emerald but Emerald would be more bright and cheery where the Tulle bunches up together.

All those lid cut outs a waste? No! Cut the lids into thin strips and you have a lot of plant marker labels you can write on and use for your seedlings. Also years down the road when the Sun damages the containers you never throw them away, you cut them into strips and reuse them for plant marker labels. Reduce, reuse, recycle.

Life is good!

Planting these now.

Strawberries and Raspberries in the fridge for a month or two of cold treatment then will plant those out.

I just mowed myself a whole lot of green for the green layers of the grow in place composting lasagna method.

I fired the lawn mowing service when I moved in and have sprayed zero poisons on my lawns. This is good to go.

In the one of many bags I have slowly fermented used coffee grounds that will provide a nitrogen rich layer in the lasagna mix.

All 5 containers are now built. All 5 containers are now planted. 1 to Rosemary, 4 to Peppers. Looks like I need to go get more containers :ROFLMAO:

The County Sheriff stopped in front of my house and started asking me questions about what I was doing. I took him into my back yard and explained the Hügelkultur system, the wood chips system, the stabilization of the clay soils, the UV radiation protection for the top soil humus ecosystem and the different species of frogs, lizards, bumblebees, dragonflies, hover flies, black soldier flies, how the mushroom and fungus and forest floor ecosystem work, how the trees are in symbiotic relationship with the fungi and life in general that has been in my yard since starting this project and I've not even planted a single plant yet. He took down the documentary details on the system I am applying to this Texas location and he said he will stop by again to ask more questions when he has them. Looks like I have another convert on the way.

Life is good!

Time to get some green and smaller logs into the Hügelkultur bed system.

43DA0ADF-9B52-48E7-931D-DB9FE5394422.jpeg

Where am I getting them from you ask? From my front yard tree of course!

1E3BC45C-1175-48AC-AFC0-F112EF6D8B1B.jpeg

The original owners of this house never pruned the tree in the front yard and never hired a tree service to do it for them. I got tired of branches poking me in the face when I mow the front lawn. I am also sick of watching branches growing into my house and getting ready to cause damage and to clog up my rain gutters.

717E0A72-96E8-4282-8F83-0A5AD5BAA0BF.jpeg

Time to do what I call a hard pruning of the front tree. Any branches growing down or sideways is gone. Only branches growing upwards in praise of the Sun God stay. I will let the top layer expand and fill in creating shade while leaving the center open and airy.

A1E6BFBE-AC56-4FBD-87B7-981DC6D3EEF0.jpeg

While waiting for my Tulle fabric to arrive so I can finish building the lids I might as well make use of the smaller branches to provide some shade to the compost thin place growing containers.

The well kept secret of professional arborists in the know is this tool imported from Japan. The Ichiban Samurai. Extremely sharp and stays that way, quickest most effortless cuts. Including my finger! Not for people who don't know what they are doing. ;)

This entire tree was done by hand. No chain saws, no noise. I have many chain saws but could not be arsed bringing one out and setting it up.
