The amazing thing about this story is that the people in these types of states keep voting the same people into office year after year.

I guess you get what you vote for.

New York has a 75% import tax on tobacco...it's 85% in Florida...and those a State taxes, not federal.

New York has lost over 3 million of its population in the past 10 years. They are the second highest taxed people in the country.

Someday there won't be anymore tax money to take...where are the politicians going to get there money then?

i believe these people dont pay attention to history,,,,

first they taxed the TEA, and look what happened there, in the harbour,

soon the people are going to wake up , and tell government , it has it's hands too deep in our pocket's.

the governer said it was to save medi-caid,

why do we need to save a failing program?

erase it off the book's and be done with it,

if that fail's do we think obamacare is going to work or be better,?

socialized medicine has failed every time it's been implemented,

Historically governments have always raised sin taxes until they saw their revenues drop, then they would lower the tax slightly. I don't think you are going to see this happen this time. I believe the people and politicians of this country are so out of touch with how our society functions ( as has function very well for over 200 years) that they will keep raising taxes until we finally collapse

That's an easy one. They'll make it a federal program then you won't even be able to choose a better State!

OH YES -- The money is required for free food and medical for poor illegals. Why do we treat them BETTER than they treat THEMSELVES?

The Gov. keeps on they will be visiting home growers and calculating how many pounds of leaf they produce .Then you get a tax bill .

This is done by insurance companies . They count average leaves in a tobacco field , then measure and weight the leaves in green leaf state . Then they do their crooked math . They will strip five to 10 average size stalks in a tobacco field to get their figures .

What history Chicken ? It's all been re-written so that no-one's feelings are hurt under the guise of political correctness or in english (Lying). You cant learn history's lessons when your history is a lie. My 13 yr. old wanted to know why the constitution has so many ammendments in it ? I siad the politicians could'nt get away with what they do if they didnt change it.

You can insure large acreages of tobacco . I do , this make sure I can make farm payments if bad weather hit . Some years I pray for a hail storm and some years I hope there is no severe weather to hit a good crop . It called guaranteed pounds .

I just hope you guys dont get hit like us in the u.k as thats exactly what happens here, you have to declare how much you've cured and and ready for smoking and they charge you £44 per pound of baccy.

Any idea what the compliance rate on that would be? Somewhere between zero and zero maybe?

looks like the 'Show-Me_State' is joining the ranks now also.

If I remember correctly, this was a ballot issue a few years ago too, but it failed. My understand was that all the smokers rallyed to defeat it, was a big issue, but then it was placed on an off-year electon date. This November vote will bring out all the nanny-staters.

These "sin" taxes are out of control. This is why I started home-brewing my own beer, and why I started growing my own tobacco. As a comparison, when I lived in Spain a bottle of beer was cheaper than a bottle of water, so I guess you know what I was drinking with my dinner every night.

The adage "Knowledge is power" especially rings true in this case. Most people can't imagine doing something for themselves and reaping a huge benefit in the process. They expect big companies and governments to provide for their every whim and need, and thereby end up getting screwed three ways to Sunday in the process. The only elements necessary to break free is a little bit of patience and research.

You don't even have to be particularly ambitious anymore to find out what you want. The Internet has made knowledge so cheap and easy that people take it for granted. Things considered "trade secrets" for hundreds of years are now barely given a second thought. Now it boils down to who is willing to take hold of it and use it. I feel so lucky to live in a time where I can determine my level of freedom based on what knowledge I assimilate and put to use.
