Advance and Auto Zone can loan or rent tools like that, especially if you take your Powermatic to the store and use it there.

Here is a new one from Walmart for $13.44.

This style has thinner jaws and may fit under the gear better.

Yeah, back in my young man days when I was a junior Electrician's Mate Petty Officer. I pulled so many bearings rebuilding motors and such I can't count them. I also had an electric shop with all the proper pullers, presses and space to work on that. Nowadays, if I can't fix it with a good wire brushing and a few shots of oil, I replace the whole thing. Recon I've got my money's worth out of this one, so I'm not going thru the headaches of any extensive teardown. Of course, I would be saying the exact opposite if I was an EM3 or EM2 now though lol, cause money is tight for those junior enlisted folks.

Good luck with your teardown and rebuild.

Cheers
I purchased a $2.00NZ lighter from the $2 shop, it was refillable and worked great for about 6 months, then stopped. I figured that it has to be fixable, so I pulled it apart and 5hrs later thought, why am I messing around with a $2.00 item.
Threw it in the rubbish and got a new one.

If you end up making your own make sure the part that contacts the bearing goes almost all the way to the center of the bearing (the inner race). If you don't, you'll pull the outer shell off , the bearings will fall out and you'll still have the inner race stuck onto the shaft.

A long time ago, on a small motor I have used a pair of needle nose with the shaft sitting in the wire cutting slot on the backside of the bearing and used a good sized screwdriver to leverage the bearing up. It was a tight fit and I had to use gentle prying, but since I didn't have a clam shell puller that size, I had to improvise. I've had my shredder torn down before to the level you noted, but didn't proceed with pulling the plates any further. Problem with the shredder is the clearance is next to none, so not sure if what I did on the small motor would work or not. I looked on Amazon for small bearing pullers and I have always used clam shell as they support the bearing better than the prong types, but when you're backed into a corner, any vessel that does the job is good.

Check on Amazon for:
Search for Pinion Gear Pullers
DAYUAN 14pcs 5 ton Capacity Bearing Separator Puller Set 2" and 3" Splitters Remove Bearings Kit
Two Jaw Pilot Bearing Gear Puller, Bearing Gear Remover Tool Carbon Steel Adjustable Pump Pulley Remover Hand Tool Removal Kit Straight Type(4inch)

Prices are really good for the light work needed of them.

Hope this may help.

Cheers
thank you..

not sure there is enough clearance on the bearings to use clamshell.. ill take a look at options later this week.
appreciate the suggestions

Freeotatv: A few months ago, I had a stripped nylon gear which I successfully replaced after a strip and rebuild.
You mentioned having difficulty removing the gold plate. That would have been because your bearing/s were stuffed as I found it easy to lever off gently with 2 screwdrivers.
Now, once you get to complete your repairs, examine the inside of the 2 black side covers. On the inside look at the collars where the allen screws go through. Mine were cracking badly (one collar had broken in half!) What I did is use plenty of Araldite (2 part glue) around ALL the collars to strengthen them. It has worked a treat. So when you screw in the allen screws, do not over tighten them.

Bob: Zico now have little to no parts stocked for the shredder (as you know, it's no longer manufactured) and after talking to a lady on the phone for ages, she admitted they are not interested in offering any technical help. This is a shame as they used to be so extremely obliging in previous years.
