Not sure if there's a more appropriate section to post this.

Does ring gauge effect smoking time?

For example, a 20g cigar that's short and fat vs a 20g cigar that's long and thin.
Wound they have the same smoke time as there's the same amount of tobacco? Or the larger ring gauge would smoke faster?
Thanks

The cross-section of the cigar (size of the radius of the foot of the cigar—the lit end) determines how much tobacco is combusting simultaneously. A fatter cigar provides a greater smoke volume per puff, because more tobacco is combusting with each puff. (This is similar to a large diameter pipe bowl, compared to a small diameter pipe bowl.) The result is that a fat cigar of the same weight as a thin cigar will burn that same weight of tobacco more rapidly. I would say that, more or less, cigars of the same length will last about the same duration, regardless of their weight. [This is not quite true, since the cross-section of combustion may also influence the temperature of combustion. Narrow gauge cigars tend to burn hotter, if the puff volume is the same as for a large gauge cigar.]

Another consideration of ring gauge is that the fatter the cigar, the less the aroma of the burning wrapper and binder contribute to the overall aroma of the burning cigar, since the surface area proportion of the total cigar is lower for fat cigars than for thin cigars.

My experiences agree with @deluxestogie observations. Generally, all other variables being equal, the length of the cigar plays the most significant role in burn time. However, as stated above, the diameter of the cigar affects the combustion temperature of the tobacco as well as the proportion of Binder/Wrapper to Filler, and this can lead to the same cigar blend tasting slightly different for each ring gauge.

The density of your filler will also play a role in burn time: Loosely packed filler will burn faster than densely packed filler.
