Almost all “Virginia” (bright leaf) strains have high sugar content compared to burley or cigar leaf (which have nearly none). It’s the way they are cured (flue cure) that preserves the sugar content, unlike air cure.
The highest sugar content is found in oriental (Turkish) sun cured strains.
Of the few bright leaf I’ve grown, Yellow Pryor has been the sweetest.

I agree with everything you've said (except for the oriental part). My question is more about what's available on the current VA leaf market. The general view seems to be that the VA on the market isn't as sweet as it once was back when the government was regulating tobacco auctions. I've been trying to find the exception to the rule (if there is one). I've only been buying uncut leaf for a few months so I'm new to it. After testing three or four different VAs I've only located one that actually tastes mildly sweet when smoked straight and uncased. But maybe I'm missing something? I'm not talking about grow your own; that's a different story.

Go with Lemon Virginia. Next up is Virginia Bright, then Virginia Red. Having attended a flue-cured tobacco auction with @FmGrowit (Don, owner of Whole Leaf Tobacco) in North Carolina, I can assure you that there is always a range of quality among the millions of dollars of tobacco bales offered at each auction. Don paid the very most for any bale of Lemon Virginia sold that day. I inspected it, handled it, smelled it. It was worth every penny. Purchasers at the auctions get only what they are willing to pay for.

Any suggestions on virginia leaf that's sweet? Seems like high sugar content is hard to find.
I agree with Bob, Don's Virginia's are the best you will find available to those of us who buy from the interwebs. Over the years I have purchased whole leaf baccy from five different online vendors, WLT is the best in all regards, quality, consistency, packaging, shipping, and customer support. I don't pay a lot of attention to sweet, but have had a couple of virginia varieties from WLT that I recall being noticeably sweeter than others. Bob is certainly steering you in the right direction .

I'm like you in that I'm fairly new to the whole leaf environment, but as DeluxeStogie noted, the Lemon VA I get from Whole Leaf Tobacco is the sweetest I've found, and I tend to lean toward the sweeter leafs. After the Lemon, the next one I think is the Thin Leaf 1st Priming from Whole Leaf also. Currently I'm using those two along with WLT's Kentucky Burley for cigarettes while waiting to get engaged in blending different blends for pipe.

Just my two cents as I am new and learning my way.

Cheers

The lemon is the sweetest. I love the sugar content in the viriginia. Right now blending some with the older red. Super sweet tobacco and I combine 70% lemon with some red
