I realize after scrolling passed it now probably a million times, that title has thrown me off and did alot when I first came here. I now see Don intended this website to benefit Whole Leaf Tobacco (his business), When I read that title it means I can sell there, much like an online farmers market. I realize that this is incorrect and is really just wanted to be used for trading tobacco between people. (Correct me if I am wrong please admins/moderators).

I suggest changing it to "Trade Homegrown Whole Leaf Tobacco" or something of the like, chime in.

Michibacy, It would defy reason to think a few homegrown plants could compete in a commercial market. All my money is made on savings by getting the best info on growing my own and not paying for processed tobacco. If I tried to sell my crop at Don's prices or larry's for that matter I might make $.50 an hour for labor growing, harvesting, curing, and storage.Thats before expenses. It is however close to several grand in savings at processed prices. The sharing and trading of untried leaves is invaluable to know what to grow or buy.

AMEN ! I used to pay ~$1/cigar (50 cigar boxes) . Now it's less than that and they're a damn sight better cigars too. (Havana -- MD609 filler, Havana binder and CT shade wrapper.)

One cigar weighs ~15 gms.. One pound = 450 gms.. figuring ~20% loss to ribbing = 360/15 = 24 cigars Three pounds of whole leaf = 3 X $15 + $20 shipping = $64.
3 X 24 = 74 cigars. $64 / 74 = 87 cents / cigar. The numbers are even better in the cigarette analysis. Figuring .9 gm. / cig, $3 for a carton of tubes and a retail cig price of $70 / carton my numbers say 360 gm. X 0.9 = 400 cigs = 2 cartons for $15 + $7 = $11 / carton or $1.10 / pack.

These numbers are conservative and your savings will probably be more.

Yes, it hardly makes any sense for a homegrower to sell tobacco, especially when it improves with age. When I think of the labor involved in producing 10 pounds of tobacco, to sell it for little more than a hundred bucks... On the other hand, having a good amount of tobacco stockpiled will come in handy in case times get really tough.

I'm just talking strictly for ease/stress relief of the website managers. Whether it's feesable or not to sell it, I just can see where a lot of passersbye or new members might see it as a place to try to make a few bucks off some tobacco.

Or maybe maybe two different sections, one for larger buyers and one for trading between members

Yes, you are incorrect. Read the entire paragraph. It includes the statement, "If you are a grower and have whole leaf tobacco to sell, in any quantity (by the bale or down to 1 pound), you are welcome to market that product here at no charge."

John, for cigarettes, I figure 6 oz. tobacco per carton. [A can of bugler worth] or .266 lbs. shredded.

[heres an approximation of what I'll end up with in cig. tobacco]
480 oz. after destemming say Div. x16oz. =30 lbs. div. by .266 lb.=112.78 6 oz. cans or cartons. Add in your rolling paraphanalia and deduct from cost of carton or ryo at local pricing. For me its over $3500.00 of money saved less time and expenses. Not counting my cigar varietys this year. or 2 years worth at a carton a week.
At whole leaf price closer to $300.00-600.00. Yep I would lose my shirt, pants and socks selling it.

Yeah you'd have to produce acres to reasonably consider selling any. I've not nearly enough considering I use it. Factor in the fact it improves with age and its not like the price goes up exponentially if it's older. Just wouldn't make sense.

Hell I've grown for 2 years now and I still buy leaf. No. I'm not going into the biz.
