A one year rotation..lol. I now have about 20 pipes. Half are the cob seconds and the rest sorted used estate briars. I really like the way Sid presents his pipes. Always with a little thought out classy background.

Pipe smokers are pretty rare these days and have been for many years. I have never had any friends who smoked a pipe. All of them smoked cigarettes. My father smoked a pipe full time and I can't remember any of his friends smoking a pipe either. Pipe smokers are a rare breed. Cigars are about the same as well. If you take a look back into let's say the world war years of the early and mid 20th century you see pipe smokers a lot more often. At least a few in a group of men are always present. Today that trend seems to have died out. I can almost bet I'm the only pipe smoker in my small town county seat. Many of the small convenient stores here do not even sell pipe tobacco.

I believe that pipe smoking, which has never been a predominant means of smoking tobacco for the last 200 years, has been gaining over the past 10 or so years.

A 2014 report from ABC News: http://abcnews.go.com/Lifestyle/pipe-smoking-rises-ashes-hip/story?id=26081188

Judging from the rapid growth in the introduction of new pipe blends, and resurrection of old pipe blends, evident on many websites, there must be increasing revenues there. My suspicion is that much of the growth is occurring in college and university communities, as well as in the larger urban areas.

Just have a look at the staggering number of expensive, custom pipes offered at smokingpipes.com: https://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/

or the huge selection of premium pipe tobaccos at pipesandcigars.com: https://www.pipesandcigars.com/shop/shop-by-pipe-tobacco-brands/1803001/

What is available, in the way of both pipes and pipe tobacco blends seems to be expanding. The losers in that department are the legendary tobacco brands (e.g. Rattray's, Dunhill, etc.) that outsourced their manufacturing to factories in other countries.

In addition, the laws now forbid smoking in indoor public places. Since pipes are mostly smoked indoors, all the pipe smokers have retreated from theaters and cafes to their homes. They've become invisible. And portrayal of smoking in TV and movies is no longer accepted by the media nannies.

While I do believe that pipe smokers have always been a small minority of smokers, my sense is that the proportion has grown of late. Unfortunately, both Santa and Frosty have given up the practice.

Truth be known . General U.S. Grant, which his first name was really Hiram (one of his first C.O's in the army called him Ulysses ,his real middle name ,in a report )was actually a preferred pipe smoker . Someone saw him in a photo with a cigar in his hand and sent him some. The rest as they say ,is history.

Sorry sir but which boys are bad?
That is awful English slang. Bad = good. Boys = things. "Bad boys" sometimes means "excellent things". In this case, I suspect that the confusing slang is asking you what tobacco you are smoking in the beautiful pipes that you show in your photographs.

Other awful English slang:
  • "That's really sick": That is truly impressive.
  • "That's bad ass": That presents an impression of strength or intimidation.
  • ...
This becomes a source of confusion in an international forum such as FTT.

@deluxestogie : Thank you for the clarification. The abbreviations and the slang expressions many times cause to us a huge problem especially when we watch films or documentaries when people speak fast using them.
@DistillingJim : No problem, you couldn't know that i am self-taught in english.
I will give you an example of Greek slang language: you know what happens when the slurry is left abandoned for a while without mixing it with a shovel, a crack shows up and after some hours became as useless. So when we want to say in a person that is not welcome to our fellowship [in a Cafe, a Tavern etc] we say to him "hey, break slurry now" means "go away, our are not useful to us".
Another example relative with pipe smoking: The tobacco used in hookah back in 1821 ear was called "toumpeki" so now when we want to say to a person "stop talking!" we say "make toumpeki" which practically means "smoke and stay quiet" because back in that era when you were smoking hookah you wee staying quiet while thinking.
Note: The abbreviations and the Slang language MUST used in a person that you are familiar or is in the same status like you, if you use them in a Police officer-in the Army-in a Curt then...you "are painted" as we say here which means "you are now in huge problem". :D

Dunhill pipe tobaccos are ceasing production. The owner of the marque may or may not sell it to some other pipe tobacco manufacturer. But for a number of years now, the quality has been declining from their outsourcing of Dunhill production to the lowest bidder.
