The seeds I was send for the grow out, don't like the African air. Sowed about 50 seeds of Bahia and TI 959. The Bahia sprouted 3 seedlings, the TI 959 nothing. Will sow some more, hopefully they will sprout!!!
Oh dear,
Hope I have more luck with my seeds they have only been in a few days.
if you can get the Bahia to maturity will that mean those 3 will provide seeds that will do well there in S.A?
Any thoughts on what may have been wrong or a just happened thing?
Varieties designated for refresh grow-outs from the FTT seedbank are selected specifically because they are getting older. Sometimes they are not viable.

Ben , don't feel too bad. The Ct Shade I sowed 3 separate times didn't amount to anything...not a single 1 made it to field planting size . And only 2 of the 18 Ct Broadleaf made it to the field ...
Not sure if it was me, the seed or what ...BUT, I will try another time.
A number of us had low/no germination from "growout seed" this year; as bob said, it is older seed in need of refresh. Take good care of the ones that do start.
With my re-sow, Iv`e got about 2 Bahia plants, that I will grow and catch the seed, but the TI 959 nothing after the second sowing, nothing. Pity, I would have liked to help with the grow out. Another bad one ( one of my own that I caught the seed from last season) is La palma, not good germination at all!!!! All my other varieties are fine, good germination.
Ben, do you start your seed inside on germination (heat) mats under light? I found my germination improved tremendously when I added the germination mat. If you don't, I made my own set up by putting rope light Xmas lights in a bed of kitty litter inside a plastic storage tote. Then put my seed trays on that. Alternatively a guy (or gal) could buy something like this; http://www.amazon.com/Hydrofarm-MT1...?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1440646330&sr=1-18
The nice thing about the commercially available model is that it doesn't require a thermostat and the cost is about the same. I had the rope light and a temp controller so it wasn't any expense on my end.
I also noticed my starts put on quick leaf growth in comparison to no mat. I regulated temp to 75 F for the soil in my starts. The previous year (same seed) resulted in some germination but nothing more than sprouts. Nothing put on growth. Same soil and everything. I controlled my environment better and things took off.
I was growing Connecticut Broadleaf and One Sucker.
