think I will take this soaking opportunity to spread a couple tablespoons of 13-13-13 around the perimiter of each plant. let it soak in good. Also slug pellets in order.

I've been trying the same thing. If were gonna have all the water we might as well try to make the plants use it.

Best of luck in the UK. Hope you have a good British summer. Stiff upper lip old chap and all that jazz. Just beginning my land prep. In the middel of winter here in South Africa.
Cheers

so in the midst of all this crazy/rainy weather, I seem to have a growth spurt going on. This silver river has sat and done nothing for 4 weeks.

That's great! Ain't it fun to watch?

Maybe just because it is my first year..........BUT.........YES!!!! I find myself "prowling" the patches at this point. Probably more than I should or need to but hey........

I hope the enjoyment I have in watching them grow does not diminish as the years/seasons go by.

As much as I would like to say, I grow my own and will never have to buy tobacco again I realize this is a little optimistic for my first try.

I will consider this first year successful with two small goals:

1. SOME good smoking tobacco.
2. SOME good seeds from each variety for next year.

Congrats on getting one to bud out?????? I think????

My first real tobacco bud head! I've only seen pictures so far. When your plants aren't growing even a sucker or a strange new bug is exciting. :)

u and I have the same excess water issues.

Have you tested your soil? All the pics I remember seem to have a lot of pine trees in them. Years of acidity may call for a dose of lime to straighten out the PH. Just a thought.

hopefully no bud heads around here for another 4 weeks or so.

I didn't plant the patch with the pines around it. Mainly hardwoods near the patch I did plant. My soil test showed a pH of 7.0. A little high but not too bad. One difference between our wet seasons that could be a benefit to your plants is how early I got my plants in the ground. They've had wet feet since around the 3rd week of April. I think if it dries out soon, you'll be cooking with peanut oil. I have no idea whether or not my plants have suffered permanent damage. I'm considering pulling one of the weaker ones to check for nematodes or root rot.

I planted in the pines, and out of all my poor waterlogged plants they are growing best. They're about 2' tall now, the rest are way behind.

Knucks,
If all the plants in a stand are similar, I wouldn't waste one pulling it up. You know the roots will be less developed than ideal. Unless you expect to yank up and replant the entire plot, the specific appearance of a single plant is not likely to be helpful.

That makes sense for two reasons. One, tobacco likes acid soil. The only reason to add lime is for the calcium. Second the tree roots will drain the soil nearby and with all the rain you've had that's a good thing.

Good point Bob. If I do have nematodes or root rot, it will show up just as well at the end of the season. Best to stifle my curiosity and wait things out.

last night's storms caused me some pretty heavy leaf damage, falling pine needles are evil spears of destruction; a couple of my nicest plants look like swiss cheese this morning:mad: No broken main ribs so I think will be ok, just not pretty.

Feel like a groundhog in the springtime. Just saw my own shadow for the first time in days.
