Hello Harry and welcome! This was my first year to grow anything and I got though OK. Curing will keep you busy, you won't get bored. Processing will keep you busy the rest of the year. You can have all the fun that's legal that you want and a bunch of good guys to help you.

Welcome to the forum.

I have no idea what seeds you're expecting, but I will say you would be much further ahead growing a known type and variety. Ebay sellers tend to make up names for their seeds and the only way to truly know what you're growing it to send the leaf to a lab.

You might want to take a look at these varieties from the seed bank distribution program. These varieties are known to most members who can offer assistance throughout the growing, curing and processing of the leaf.

We'll be learning the pipe making experience together. I'm just getting set up to make my first pipe. There's already a couple of makers here. This is a good place for you. Pipes and tobacco go together like ... well, pipes and tobacco. LOL

This is the listing of the seeds I got from Ebay, what is your opinion?
I am mostly interested in making my own pipe tobacco, I understand Latakia is not a strain of tobacco but I hope to experiment with some oriental and possibly make my own latakia for english and balkan blends for pipe tobacco

Welcome.
I was on that link on ebay you send. I saw picture of tobacco. I beccome some kind not trusty about the strains they offer if i don't see white bag on flovers, like i saw here on this forum.
But in my first year I have totaly mixed up all my strains and i still smoke good tobacco. Happy first season.

My opinion is the listing seems to be credible. The description of the Virginia is a little embellished with several uses of "light", but nothing outrageous.

The description of the Latakia actually sounds sincere and accurate. I'd be interested in the Latakia seeds myself.

My guess is at least the types are correct...as far as the varieties...it's anybody's guess.

Welcome.

Welcome to the site Rainmax and I do have to agree. Seeing flowers in full bloom isn't a good sign, but no definitive conclusion can be drawn from that.

I wish I would have found this forum b4 I found those seeds HRMPH!

$5.00 for 4000 seeds isn't bad. The Latakia I'm sure has already stirred some curiosity. What seeds are you looking for? Cigar varieties, etc? Once I get mine in one place I'm sure I can spare some. I know I have some extra burley and virginia. Don said you can get two varieties from the seed bank so you'll be in good shape. If you're not sure exactly what you want yet there's time to sample some whole leaf from www.wholeleaftobacco.com. He has a good deal on cigar or cigarette sampler packs with some good varieties that might help you decide what you want to grow. Regardless, I have those TN90 burley and virginia gold you can have. Shoot a PM at me and I'll get them in the mail.

What seeds are you looking for or would you rather have?

well I am basically hoping to grow for pipe tobacco, I like English blends and was hoping to be able to process these into usable tobacco for such blends I also like some VA/perique blends
so I think the seeds I have coming are ok for that but now I am worried about the cross pollination thing and not knowing which variety I have coming

Harry,
Home production of an English "Balkan" style pipe tobacco is more challenging than it would at first seem.

A typical Balkan blend contains:
  • flue-cured Virginia
  • pressure-cured Perique
  • fire-cured Latakia
  • sun-cured Turkish
Some also include unflavored black Cavendish (steam-processed).

It's easy enough to grow a Virginia, Perique and a Turkish. The variety used to make Latakia is unclear (and I'd be suspicious of an Ebay vendor who has that answer), but probably most Turkish leaf that is heavily fire-cured (say, for about 3 months) with the correct wood will fit the bill.

But the various curing methods, each of which can be achieved by a home grower, are unique challenges requiring unique equipment. You will likely air-cure your first grow. Building a kiln to rapidly age the leaf is a helpful addition (and can allow you to produce leaf suitable for pipe as well as cigar). Search "Cozy can" for a thread on the crudest, most basic flue-curing chamber--made from a trash can. Also search "Black Cavendish" for that technique.

For fire-curing, the process is the same as smoking meats. I have fire-cured several varieties, including Samsun, Shirazi and Hickory Pryor. It's nice, but it isn't Latakia. In the short term, you'll have to buy Latakia (from, for example, Cornell & Diehl) if you really want it. The same goes for Perique, unless you build a Perique press.

I have made some reasonably nice pipe blends with a combination of kilned air-cured Virginias, various Orientals, and fire-cured leaf, together with some acquired Perique. I also enjoy well-aged burley in a pipe. Pure black Cavendish is rather bland, but is useful in blending. My breakthrough came when I was able to flue-cure leaf. This gave me a true Bright Virginia taste. But it took several years to get around to trying to build a flue-cure chamber.

So long as you approach this as an adventure, and enjoy experimenting, I'm sure you'll find numerous pipe blends that you enjoy. You may also discover that you enjoy packing your pipe with pure leaf of a single variety at a time.
