I want to make my own dip for the first time! I have burley, dark burley, chronowski, dark smoked kentucky raw tobacco.

I wanted to ask if you have to ferment the tobacco before you use it to make dips? I've done snus before!But that's another topic.

And how do I control that I have to spit a lot?

How would you mix my tobacco as a percentage for an oldscool tobacco flavor?

Fermenting is not really required; color curing and aging until the tobacco tastes good is pretty much all you need.

Controlling the spit isn’t possible- it’s a reaction to the tobacco being in your mouth- if you swallow it, you will be sick, and vomit.

An old school tobacco flavor would likely be majority of Burley, with a small addition of fire cured/smoked for the flavor- I’d go 90% burley 10% smoked for my first test batch, if I had your inventory.
Dark burley I’ve never heard of- I’d try it by it self. Chronowski is entirely unknown to me- what type is it?

So should I proceed with the dipp in the same way as with snuss ? Who do I follow the recipes?! I thought dipp was more fermented and therefore unhealthier than snus!

I Make my dip using the snus method because it is healthier.
I just don’t powder the tobacco- I make it a course flake, but cutting it so it looks like commercial cigarette tobacco works, too.
Fermentation makes the dip more likely to have tobacco specific nitrosamines- a carcinogen.
Snus has a better medical track record, so that’s the method I use.
What recipes were you thinking of trying?

In terms of taste, doesn't that make any difference? I recently made chew! Unfortunately, the consistency of the chew was not good and I almost didn't have to spit! In most recipes for chew no carbonate is used! That's why I thought that you don't spit because I used carbonate! So I make the dipp almost exactly the same as snus. The only difference is that I don't grind the tobacco into powder?!


I don't know yet which recipe I'm trying! I'll probably try a lot of different recipes and once I've found the best base, I'll make my own recipe.


I bought a crockpot and I'm curious to find out the best method! I like generic old-school recipes and those with tobacco flavor! And if I have the business I will try again on chew! The thing is that here in Germany we don't get chew so easily anymore and not dipp at all.



I stopped smoking until a few years ago and I felt much better with oral tobacco! At that time I used dipp and snus for during the week. And on the weekend a delicious apple chew (where you have to spit a lot) I liked to spit!

At some point, the commercial import of dip and snus was banned! And since then, unfortunately, I've been smoking cigarettes again. With the homemade dipp and chew I would like to switch again

I’m in Germany, too.
I use cigarillos for chewing tobacco- 1/2 to 3/4 of an Al Capone (filter removed) works just fine for me. (I’m a lightweight)
I’ve thought about drying one out, then rehydrating it with a carbonate solution to see what it does, but haven’t had time.
Haven’t tried Moods, yet. And hopefully my burley harvest will make that
unnecessary.
Originally, American chewing tobacco was made out of cigar scraps, but, this was before cigar styles changed, along with the varieties grown to make them.

I’m afraid I can’t help with the crockpot- I’ve been using a pressure cooker for 4 hours, or just dipping leaf I’ve color cured, then pressed in a noodle press for 2 weeks.
