Like the title says, I want to try a pipe. I have always loved a pipe. I am a cigar guy mostly but sometimes I just don't have the time for a whole cigar. The two pipe sets? a couple of singles? just one? help me out please.

Welcome to the dark side bro.

I really like my MM bent emerald (similar to Towne cobbler), to be honest I’m hesitant to recommend one of their more expensive ($25sh) pipes to someone just wanting to try it out. However in contrast to the price of commercial cigars, if one of the more expensive ones tickles your fancy then go for it.

Their Legend, Diplomat and Country Gentleman all get good feedback. I personally prefer the bent stems as I find they hang more comfortably when clenching. Others may have differing experiences.

If going for something from their standard range I’d also recommend purchasing some of their danish stems and using these instead. They are a more durable plastic while still having the advantage of being drilled by injection (I think that’s the term). This method of drilling the airway through the stems is only possible with those soft plastics and is one of the reasons why MM cobs are regarded as smoking so well.

Id also say, maybe steer clear of their chimney style pipes to start with. These are fantastic to stuff with flakes, but I get the sense you are after a shorter smoke or something to smoke when you wouldn’t normally reach for a cigar...like shovelling snow.

hope you are not more confused now. Lol

I second what Davo said.

The “Country Gentleman” has a much larger bowl than the standard “Legend” pipe and it is a big upgrade in workmanship.

Corn cobs do have a specific taste during the break in period, so keep that in mind and don’t give up on the first few bowls.

If you can wait, Missouri Meerschaum sometime sells a “seven days set” of second pipes. You get whatever shape they choose to sell as second, but all are perfectly smokable with just minor esthetic blemishes. For a first pipe, a Legend, a diplomat, a Missouri pride or a Washington are all a good choice.

One is probably fine for now. I’m fairly abusive towards my cobs and they last me a while.

If you can drill a single hole, then consider making one:

I think I have 7cobs already, and 5more in the post....but most are either unsmoked or not reached for. I’ve found that cobs actually smoke better the more you smoke them.

One is probably sufficient, but I understand the idea of making the most of shipping. Where were you looking at buying it man, as if going through a tobacco retailer you can also get tobacco on same order. I think 4noggins has the pipe pictured above for $10

if you were thinking of spending more than $20, I’d recommend going for one of their pipes with acrylic bits as opposed to two of their standard range, unless of course you wish to try different styles of pipes. If you found you didn’t like the more expensive cob and wanted to get rid of it, it could still hold some value to someone as a “forever stem” or custom mod.

now what tobacco are ya thinking?

Well, I'm not one to have much patience. I will be testing the waters with a cob. But I went to look at local brick and mortar store. The only store that sells several pipes is the liquor store. I looked at tobacco, and no one could reccomend anything.. well guys buy this or that... they had American Club, and some other tobacco I hadn't ever seen.

So I looked the pipes over and she showed her last tray.. and this little pipe called me and said just try me....
So I brought it home... now, just buy some cheap tobacco and give it a whirl?
Grind up a cheap honey, rum cigar that ill never smoke?
Order a bag?

I want thank you all, I found that in order to find a pipe would be nothing. I had to find a pipe that satisfy the itch. Also, I had to find a pipe that fit my hand, I have some fair size meat hooks. The pipe might not be a forever pipe. But it is my first. It has a bent tip, the bowl sets right with a clench. Its comfortable in my hand. It may need a little texture added, not a problem with an inexpensive pipe... thank you all again. I will use these suggestions in getting my cob picked out.

A nice pipe with crappy tobacco can be a trying experience. Look through the blends from Cornell & Diehl:

They make decent pipe tobacco, and a gazillion styles to choose from.
