sorry I am late to the conversation..... A cob is an excellent choice for a pipe, the pipes as a whole smoke excellent without the complexity of break in time for a briar...
I have seven.....I have three Country Gentlemen, and like the pipe so much I bought an $18 forever acrylic stem from Steve Norse at Vermont freehand...more than the pipe cost..!!!

If you can find a a Brick and mortar tobacco shop I think it is best to pick it out in person, they usually have a tub and you can get one that has the stem mounted into the cob closer to the bottom, which is important, as you smoke it the shank will burn in and give you a nicely fused bottom with the hard wood plug.... you can see this in the last pic, this is the first pipe I bought after returning to pipe smoking after a 25 year hiatus, it is about a year and a half old....
