Been playing in the shop today. Made some progress on the block I rooked JBD out of. I want to show off as much of the plateau top as possible, so I'm going to leave the sides fairly slab sided with rounded front and rear ends. A little more work on the belt sander for the stem rough out and then it's all files and sandpaper. Thanks Randy.

Pipe #9? This pipe was made from a block gifted me by JBD. It is as wide as the block but I made the bowl long to retain as much of the awesome top as possible. The gnarly looking stuff is what remained after I wire brushed off the bark. It was from the outside of the burl. Thanks again Randy B.

Thank you. Now help me figure out how to display it. It slides right out of every pipe stand I have. doh.gif

Damn you work fast Knucks. Beautiful.

Display: How about a polished brass or aluminum plate for a "stand". Countersink flush two neodymium magnets, one in the bottom of the pipe and one on the center of the stand. I can make you a base and furnish magnets if you like the idea.

Would a strong magnet hold through the pipe if I just dropped a ball bearing inside?

a bearing would make the pipe "tippy". However countersinking the magnet in the bottom of the bowl would work. the neomags I have are 1/2" dia x 3/32" thick and they sit securely when placed on opposite sides of a piece of 1/4" plywood with no other support.

The bottom of the bowl tapers down, not to a V but to a sharp U. If the magnet is strong enough, I could countersink it into my pipe stand and it would keep the pipe from sliding out of it. The stand would keep the pipe from tipping and the bearing would be removable. You may be on to something.

Holy cow. Mcmaster-Carr has a 1/2" dia. 3\8" thick magnet that will hold seven pounds. Where do these things come from? wow

Rare earth magnets have been around for a while now. Check Walmart. They have small, strong magnets very cheap. I believe they would be more than adequate for your modest needs. What would be cool is to have several magnets set up in opposition so the pipe would "hover" over the stand and not fall off or tip over

a short concave base pedestal (kind of shaped like the top of a golf tee) would work; with the magnet set in the center. base of stainless or polished aluminum and pedestal of polished brass. would be quite an elegant setup, and leave onlookers wondering how it does not fall off.

Not to rain on the neodymium parade, but many years ago, I made a number of stands for oddly shaped calabash gourd pipes. It is basically a flat wood base with a flat wood back (like a bookend). A notch or loop in the back provides a rest for the stem. The bowl (gourd) of each pipe is kept from sliding away by two small porcelain drawer pulls (or other stops) standing up from the base.

Bob

NOTE: Do you really want to be waving around a powerful magnet in a world filled with sensitive electronic devices?

Even so, that floating pipe idea is a cool one for that masterpiece :)

My stand is built much as you describe, like two bookends back to back, six pipe rests per side. I have some walnut dowel that I could use to make a stop in front of one of the rests. Good solution.
