yesterday i had a day off finally and it was nice enough outside to enjoy a cigar. I pulled a CAO Pilon 5x52 from the vault . Nice oily dark Ecuador Habana wrapper . The flavor was woody, creamy, chewy, slightly sweet ,hint of dark cocoa. Not an excellent "wow" stick but very enjoyable and the next one I smoke may have to be accompanied by a whiskey or coffee. While I smoked it and enjoyed the sunshine on the front porch I looked it up on a review and found both the CAO site and a Youtube clip, watched blend developer Ricky Rodriguez explain the pilon process and how it was made . Following that was a short vid of their new CAO Flathead "Steel Horse" a larger, stronger stick aimed at the biker crowd such as myself. I may have to track one of those down to try .

I had a couple blending sessions the last few days. I wanted to try out the Flojo and Mata Fina. Today I'm trying one that I blended after seeing the AO II Kit was updated. I guessed at the proportions and rolled a 3 of these along with other blends. I can tell that with some aging this should be a nice blend. I must have had my binder in too high of case because this one is not burning too easily.

Im not sure why my pictures are always sideways when I upload them to this forum. The lancero across the top (on left) I did not have a mold for so that is free hand. In getting better each time. I'm really looking forward to trying these after they have rested a while.

Your cigar rolling is looking great! Yes, it's possible that your moisture content was higher than it need be. I free hand most of mine, so your lancero looks good too. The entubado method will improve burn. When Piloto Cubano Seco comes back in stock....a double binder of that ensures burn rather well.....you can even use it under the dominican binder if you wish.

The Mata Fina is a wonderful leaf, especially this new crop. The Flojo Viso as well. I've been rolling Mata Fina Puros lately with a touch of Criollo Liguero. The Mata Fina has a wonderful flavor (2013 crop) Loads of woody flavor, with a touch of a Maple floral hint on retrohale. I just use the Criollo Liguero for an extra nicotine kick, and accents the wood nicely.

Once again, you're doing quite well!

They look quite nice.
You mentioned you guessed at the proportions.
Looking at the kit you referenced, could you share what proportions you used?

[h=1]Azucarodo Oscuro II[/h]Ecuador Maduro Wrapper
Dominican Cigar Binder
Dominican Seco
Paraguay Flojo Viso
Nicaragua Ligero

Thanks.

I just used one of each filler. The Flojo was the most noticeable when I smoked one but that could just be because the binder and filler were just not burning too well and so they were not adding much to the flavor.

Smoked this quickie puro last night, rolled from the Honduran Habano wrapper Don sold me.

I am truly in love with it. The flavor is rich yet velvety soft; cocoa, cedar, and bread. Thick smoke with a powerful aroma. The only down side is that, since this filler was originally intended to be wrapper, it is damper than filler ought to be, and so that's probably why it went out halfway along. I warn you, do not re-light this stuff. Nasty. I hate relights anyways.

I hope Don gets a better batch that he can sell again. His supplier sold him a bale of mostly trash leaves and told him it was wrapper leaf. He put it on WLT, a couple of us bought, and now Don had to pull it from the site, and he's busting his butt hand sorting thru the bale leaf by leaf to select enough sound wrapper leaves to make things right for those who did buy from him. A tedious business. If he can get another bale which is in good shape, you guys really ought to score some. This is truly a quality flavor. And it's so easy to work with. Meanwhile, I have a load of the crap stuff for filler and a load of sound leaves to wrap them up with, so I feel happy as a pig in politics.

If I can only find some time, I will roll up a supply of these quickies and salt them away in a dry box for a month and a half. Or I may throw in a sliver of this or that flavoring and see how that works out. If only I could find some time.

Time is at a real premium around here... as in, I ain't got none, brudda.
Now I gotta get back to work on a Sunday.

Something I found that helps me; I'll roll the free hand rolled-binder with a paper towel...smooth side facing the leaf at an angle similar to putting on a wrapper, then fasten with easily peeled masking tape. Let sit a day or two drying out (drying times vary according to humidity). Then apply wrapper. Hopefully my odd-ball method helps someone....

Got an oldish Davidoff corona as a gift, but it wasn`t looked after properly. Wrapper was cracked and missing some places, all dried out. I left it in my humidor for a few weeks, re-wrapped it last night with La Palma leaf. It was a bit heavy to draw, but it was a really nice little cigar, smoked it till it burned my fingers and lips. I ripped it apart and saw it was a short filler, didn`t know Davidoff made short filler cigars!!!

Had a rare "Garage Band Day" yesterday with my college son. We set up a couple electric guitars and amps, then piped backing tracks through a PA. Huge fun, hope we didn't bug the neighbors too much.

Smoked another blend I found here on the forum. Piloto, Hab seco & viso, Mata Fina, Dom binder, Maduro wrapper. This one had 6 months age on it. Truly fantastic cigar. Burned well for 90 minutes. Mellow, huge billows of smoke. Very refined taste. 2nd half seemed to get a little strong for me but smoked it down to the nub. Thanks to whomever shared this blend.

It's a great combo of leaves for sure. If it gets a little strong, just taper back the Habano viso a bit. A twist on that blend would be to replace the Habano Viso with the Paraguay Flojo viso and keep the Habano Seco. Or one Hab. Viso and one Flojo Viso. It adds a slight hint of cherry, which is fantastic, but Habano leaves with Mata Fina are too.
Garage band days :) Glad you had a blast with your son!

I believe I got this blend from here. It was really good. I'm sure with age it would be fantastic.

Last night I had a very good blend. I saw that the Azucardo Oscuro II was Dom seco, Flojo and Nic ligero. I went with one of each to the Dom binder and Ec Maduro wrapper. It was very tasty. I will be making this one a bunch more!

BigBonner Beauty

Garden20160229_2152_Cigar_BigBonner_600.jpg

This lovely cigar was sent to me by BigBonner. The rolling is excellent, solid as a rock, and easy to draw. His blend is noted on the attached tag.

It lit easily, burned evenly, and smoked well, nearly to the last inch. (Burley in a filler tends to become damp at the butt, since it holds moisture to a greater extent than many other tobacco varieties.) The burley adds depth and punch to the overall blend.

Only with intentional focus, could I detect a slight sweetness from the rich PA wrapper. Although I expected the filler blend to be quite strong, it turned out as a medium to strong cigar. I found no bite. Aromas were leather, wood and earth. No cream or chocolate or other food products here.

Thank you, Larry, for a wonderful smoke on a warm and sunny winter day.

Bob
