While I can’t stand cigarette smoke and can understand people not liking cigar smoke (especially the next day), I have yet to have anyone complain about my pipe smoke. I’ve had numerous strangers stop and tell me how wonderful it smells… even the young girls like it. OK, maybe “young” extends to 70-ish and she said it reminded her of her grandfather’s pipe, but still…

This evening’s pipe is a mix of roughly 2 parts of my own cavendish, 2 parts of my own “carotte” pressed VA, and 1 part Samsun. All from my 2023 plants. I’m smoking it in a Savinelli 320KS Trevi. It’s… OK, for the most part, but a bit like a cigarette blend. I suppose that shouldn’t be a big surprise, given that the components are not far off of a pack of Camels. At least it’s not harsh, but it needs a little Perique or Latakia, or something. Fortunately I only mixed up enough for this admittedly rather large bowl.

I’ve been continuing to smoke my current experimental Virginia blend and am right now in a TV churchwarden. I’ve ended up creating a blend that is very reminiscent of Capstan Blue, but without the fruity casing component that Capstan has. I have really enjoyed it, but it wasn’t what I was shooting for, so I’ll finish this and start again anew.

Something about the cold brings out the joy in pipe smoking. ...6:30 am on the first actually freezing day of the year...my dogs are all business and heading back to the door, but I'm slow walking, hands in pockets, enjoying the sting of the air on my nose accompanying a perfect bowl of Samsun Bright in my Peterson 999.

Orlik Golden Sliced, in a nice Ser Jacopo which is the most expen$ive pipe I own. Actually, maybe that distinction should go to the no-name bent billiard basket pipe I bought years ago that got me back into pipe smoking again. Anyway… a nice Virginia flake with just a touch of perique, and the nicotine level is just enough that I’ll finish this one after dinner…

Watching Per Jensen’s interview the other day got me thinking about my Georg Jensen Gigant, so I pulled it out for today’s smokes.

Im still smoking my first experimental Virginia blend which consists of:

30% Ripe VA which I stoved
30% Unstoved ripe VA
30% Bright VA
10% Lemon VA
Cased with St. Giorgio Santovino and Jaggery

I was missing my first experimental Virginia batch, so I opened V2. I was planning on giving it a bit more time in the jar, but I’m not disappointed. This one is:

20% Stoved Ripe VA
10% Ripe VA
60% Bright VA
10% Lemon VA

Lightly cased in my most ambitious casing yet, which I made from Louis Jadot Pouilly Fuissé as the base with Iraqi style date syrup (from Lebanon) and pear extract.

I’m smoking it in a BC calabash.

52% Aged Turkish
16.66% Light Fire Cured
16.66% Stoved Red Virginia
16.66% Toasted DAC

I have been working on this Turkish / Fire Cured blend for a while. Not yet sure about the last two ingredients but this is getting pretty close to what I want.

I tried a Bright Leaf from Butcher's Farm yesterday, and it's by far the best Virginia I ever smoked in a pipe, it cost 14 dollars a pound for whole leaf.

The pipe is a briar pipe I made, its sort of like a calabash, it has a meerschaum bowl that I carved for it. Of course my "TinCaninString" mobile is to cheap, to want to share a photo today.

It's was 2 degrees this morning here in Pittsburgh, PA, and the snow is as high as the porch, a couple feet deep.

I’m smoking Birds of a Feather Anomalous in an Ehrlich meerschaum. I just returned to smoking a couple of days ago. I stopped since I had the respiratory infection du jour. I don’t want to return to my Virginia blend experiments until I’m sure my sense of taste and smell are fully back.
