I guess I'll wait for the sale. Does this make sense as a first order for someone who has never rolled cigars before? Is it the proper ratio of binder and wrapper to filler and do the fillers go together? I went with the Aleman for a wrapper and binder since I figure my first cigars won't be pretty anyways so I might as well save on the wrapper expense.

Fillers:
1 pound Dominican Seco
1 pound Nicaraguan Habano Ligero
1 pound Corojo 99 Seco
1 pound Dominican Ligero

Binder and Wrapper
3 pounds Aleman Oscuro Capa/Banda

Those are good to start with. You'll probably start branching out into different blends as time goes by - experiment! :)

As far as ratios, it's hard to say as the non-wrapper leaves tend to vary in size, but I typically use around 4 leaves of filler for a robusto and 5 for a toro or churchill. I usually get abt 2-4 binders per leaf of binder/wrapper, and 2 wrappers per wrapper leaf.

Good choices. Personally, I use about 2 to 1 Seco to Ligero and still end up with med. to full body smokes. If you substitute a Viso for one of the Ligeros you should be about right on strength and blending latitude. You'll use about 3 leaves of filler to one leaf of binder/wrapper. Again, personal preference, but I would buy one pound of Aleman and experiment with some other wrappers. The Maduro and Corojo are fantastic and the Ecuador Shade makes for a nice light wrapper and a good change of pace from the heavier stuff.

That's a lot of ligero unless you like your smoke strong and peppery.

Welcome Steve! Good to see you over here! I remember you from Puff! If you like some smooth and sweet, get some Piloto Cubano Seco with that mix. The Dominican Seco is medium bodied, haven't tried the corojo yet, it'll be coming this week sometime. You could drop your Liguero down to Dominican, but get the Nicaraguan Habano in a Seco or Viso. The Habano Seco leaves are beautiful to use and smoke!

Hi Dave. I seem to follow you from site to site (Puff,Facebook, FTT). I'm excited to start rolling my own. Smoking cigars rolled by others is getting a little boring. I don't care what mine look like as long as they smoke well and taste great. It appears that we can get high quality tobacco so they ought to taste better than what I have bought since I was buying budget cigars. I'm having a hard time not ordering while I wait to see what the to be determined sale is going to be. My plan is to order the following based on finding out I had too much ligero in my shopping cart last time:

Fillers:
1 pound Dominican Seco
1 pound Nicaraguan Habano Ligero
1 pound Corojo 99 Seco
1 pound Corojo Viso

Binder and Wrapper:

3 pounds Aleman Oscuro Capa/Banda

Piloto Cubano Seco is great, and can blend with almost anything. I have Corojo Seco coming this week, don't know much about it yet! Another Seco/Viso I love is the Nicaraguan Habano, if you like a woodsy smoke.

As far as the Aleman Oscuro, I personally like the flavor of the Aleman Seco/Banda Better. Dark, chocolatey, rich. I'm going to pair it with the Piloto Cubano Seco.

I used Secos as wrappers for the first 3 months, but for the price, you can't beat the Aleman Seco/Banda.
Ligueros, I use about a ¼ leaf, I know others who use a ½ leaf in the blend if you're making Churchills.

Thanks for the info. I may switch things up a bit in my order again. Are you saying you think that the Aleman Seco Banda (listed as a Binder) is a better choice for a binder and wrapper than the Aleman Oscuro Capa/Banda (listed as a Wrapper/Binder)

I did notice that the Aleman Oscuro Capa/Banda comes pre-flattened and the Aleman Seco Banda does not come pre-flattened but I'm not sure how big of a deal that is.

I'll list some of the blended kits tomorrow. I hate seeing a guy agonizing :)

I'm not even positive I will be buying a blended kit. I may just go with selecting different filler and binder. I am holding off on my order until I see what the Member Appreciation Day deals will be.

Yes I am, but there's a learning curve with all stalk cured type wrappers. When I tried both on my first order, and it was my first time working with leaves. At first, there was a learning curve for me with both.
3 months later I was craving the taste of the Seco/Banda, but received the Oscuro by mistake. This time I'm receiving the Seco Banda tomorrow.

Let's just say they are both ok, but the Seco has a Chocolatey, almost milk chocolate flavor. It mixes well with the Piloto Cubano Seco.

Please select one of the whole leaf blends from http://wholeleaftobacco.com/Whole-Leaf-Cigar-Blends_c30.htm and send me a PM with your address.

Thanks for all the help developing these blends. The order of wrapper and binder has finally arrived so I can add more blends this week. You can wait to see what is added, if there isn't anything you like listed now.

Round 2 now open.

I'm kicking around the idea of cigarette tobaccos as a cigar...there is likely some merit to creating a cigar for people who hate cigars...the "Un-cigar".

I'd like to try it, but the Aleman is a one time deal. I have the last existing inventory from the now defunct company. When it's gone...it's gone, so I can't create a whole leaf blend using any of the Aleman tobaccos.

I'll make you some, or I'll send Gdaddy a PM. Either way, you'll get some good smokes!

Great idea Don...props to you for taking care of these guys!

Again, great idea Dave! I need to get my hands on some Aleman to try...unless it is truly no longer available...then I won't want something I can't get!

Good stuff guys...these "blends" will help a lot of folks!
