I have yet to roll anything...so I am not joining in, just watching! I'm just commenting to watch this unfold! What a great contest...I'd expect it to fill up fast!

Good luck everyone!

Hmmm. A spectator?

Just buy some whole leaf, and roll some sticks. You don't need to show them off. No amount or quality of equipment or tradition or mystique can substitute for just plain old practice.

I would encourage you to get in the saddle. You will be thrilled at how easy it is to roll a smokable stogie. Concern over blending is like searching for the correct ingredients in a forum on omelets. Any old leaf will do, for starters.

The first cigar I rolled (and I actually just took the whole leaf, stem and all, and rolled it into a tight tube--who knew?) was from a discarded mud lug of some cigarette variety I picked up out of the dirt, with the permission of an Amish tobacco farmer north of Chaptico, Maryland in 1973. It drew. It burned. It tasted like a cheap cigar smoked in paradise. I was happy.

LOL Bob!

Yes, I am just a spectator of THIS contest! I have my leaf (seen posted in other threads here) and I am preparing a place to roll (see another thread I have here) so I can finally be in the saddle!

I just really like this cigar shape that is shown here and I am quiet curious about how this will play out!

By the way, what a way to begin rolling...as you did, great story!

Thank you Bob...I know that I will soon be.......happy!

Quo, Quo, Quo

We can't let this go, Quo, no, bro. We got to jolt you on your way. Here's what I suggest: I have a big bag of Dominican Seco which I don't care for. Absolutely nothing wrong with it whatever; just not my preferred flavor filler leaf. I also have some odds and ends which would serve for wrapper and binder. Can't tell you what types right off, how much, or how many. I'll hunt them out from the bottom of my leaf cooler. Absolutely nothing wrong with them; just leftovers from previous rolls. You shoot me your address via PM. I will batch all this up in a priority mail box and send you this starter kit. Nuff to roll 30 to 40 prime stogelitos.

Other than that, all you will need is...

Go buy the domestic goddess a new cutting board and take her old one for yourself. There's your work space.

Get an ulu knife from the kitchen store if she doesn't have one you can borrow. There's your leaf cutter.

Pop three bucks at the grocery for some pectin. That's your glue for the wrapper

Scrounge a squink and spritz squirt bottle from the dollar store. That's to wet your rolling board and wrapper.

That's it. You got everything. You are all set to go watch a video on how it's done and try.

A couple other optional items are a beer and a good smoke to keep you company while you roll. Fact of the matter, I'll throw in a good smoke with the rest, if you promise to show us pics of your project.

As a famous man once said: "Let's Roll." Think what rolling would do for your status, Quo.

Shoot me an addy. I am in an expansive mood.

How funny (your rimes)!

How kind (your offer)!

How helpful (you and so many others around here are)!

As you saw after posting, yes'sir...I have a good collection of cigar leaf and a chaveta from WLT! I have some pectin! I have just relocated an old desk that will be used as my rolling station! I am watching these cool videos over and over! I have some great cigars and maybe even a beer or two! I just have to make the time, while in my shop...to sit down and ROLL!

Anyway, thank you so much for the poetic offer...please pass that on to someone else deserving. I appreciate the thought VERY much!

About all those rolling videos: see one; do one. It won't come out like in the video. Watch it again; roll one again. Creativity resides in the willingness to fail.

Your first cigar is like a Bar Mitzvah, a wedding and a graduation all rolled into one.

Bob

PS: that perfecto tip is a bugger to get right.

I agree with this! I'd only add this: Perfection comes with Practice!

Just rolled 4 perfectos, or should I say Trumpetos because of the shape, 0 to 60 in 5 inches. Luckily 2 came out perfect, the other two I'll smoke sometime this week or next week :)
PS: Found a way to "flatten" the wrappers, if someone desires to do so. Sometime I just like the rustic look. Here goes:
1) Get an oak board, preferably about ⅛" thick. Have the store cut them into two foot sections. Get them as wide as your wrapper is, or more if you plan on using more than one, or cut more boards.
2) Stretch the wrapper over one board
3) Put the other board on top (this can be repeated for multiple boards)
4) On top of the 2nd board, put weights 15 to 20 lbs. ought to do. (If more boards, use more weight)
5) Let set for 30 minutes to an hour, then pull the wrapper out and use it!

Very helpful hint!

Tried to roll a few drumsticks last night, for a bit of practice. Shyte, and even worse is the wrapping! Somewhere in ftt someone showed a while back how to cut a wrapper for a figurado, if someone can remember where, please point me in the right direction! MAD OSHEA you say I can roll a mean cigar, a straight one maybe, but you would have laughed if you saw my drumstick. It was still nice to smoke though.

BigDog is in. That's two from South Africa and one from Canada. I have zero clue how I am going to conquer this international customs thing. And the mail is gonna cost a fortune!

I tell you, some of these borders are a cruel anachronism. Why do we even have a Canadian border? We love hockey. We love tacos, too. So what are we really worried about? I got no prob driving a car made in Ontario from parts made in Jalisco. I don't get it.

I'm looking at:

Mad Oshea
Buck
Indianamac
Ben Brand
BigDog

need five more...

I think it's only reasonable for international participants pick-up the difference in postage from that of a domestic mailing. Regardless of who pays for what, calculate shipping costs using USPS First Class International.

Suggestion. Just put it in a small hard boxy thing ( that doesn't dent easely) and send it by air post, cheapest airpost.
Just put something exept cigars on the parcel. Ive send some seeds to Don and cigars to my son in the Uk and it wasn't that expensive The customs on this side is almost non existing. Dont send it priority post or anything fancy. Hope I'm not talking out of turn here. If you feel its to much hassle just scrap our names, although it would be fun, and I did start practicing last night, wit catastrophic results.

As soon as I figure out "where" I put my camera? I have been doing Entubado (Cuban style rolling into tubes), and the two ends naturally taper off. I've been rolling 10 to 12" long stogies, then putting a dry double binder on them, then rolling up in a paper towel, taped, setting aside while I do another. When I have 4 or 5 this way, I take off the paper towel (works as a mold), then put on the wrapper on the whole piece. Then I cut the "log" in half, making 2 Trumpetos in this manner.

It is actually easier for me to do it this way, and I get two cigars in one roll~!

I'll go find my camera, then take pics of each step???

I like to use the gum arabic for this roll, as it is stickier. Make sure you have a wet towel to wipe your hands off, because if you get glue on a finger tip, it can pull on the wrapper. It took me a couple of days to use this glue, but worth it.
