I'm beginning to see budworms, even though nothing is budding yet. They start out as tiny, nearly transparent things. The earliest sign is divots in the tender, new top leaves. Unlike hornworms, budworms tend to eat a small hole, then move to a different spot or different leaf (where the leaves are closely clustered at the growth tip). To locate the worm, I often have to carefully separate the smallest of leaves, and inspect each side. Their black, granular poop--like finely ground black pepper--will lead the way, once they are longer than about 1/4".
The problem they create is that a very small hole in a very small leaf ends up being a gaping hole, once the leaf grows out.
