In the past few days I have needed a couple of hands that were extremely dry. To bring them back up to the case I wanted I took two wire coat hangers and wired then together to form a "T". I hung a UPS plastic bag over the T, hung the hand inside and hung the works over an old ultrasonic kids room humidifier. Over night the leaf got almost "drippy" wet. I had the humidifier set on full output. The next time I'll set it on the lowest setting and see how it does. The house is so dry I just hung the "drippy" leaf for an hour or two and then put the hand in a zipper bag. It seems to be evening out nicely. I'll adjust case as necessary to get the texture I want and still avoid mold. -- John

This home-made cigar mold just awesome. I'm going to try this out just as soon as it thaws out enough for Don to ship me some leaves without them freezing stone hard in the delivery truck. I love the fact it's FREE!

I finished the modification/repair to my recently acquired Tuck cutter. It is really just a guillotine cutter (knife and anvil). 100 years of wear had worn the anvil down to where the knife (no matter how sharp) had nothing to cut against. I got a Volkswagen push rod cover tube for $2. I cut off the ends and made a "U" shaped channel. (Pic #1) I glued it into the groove in the Tuck cutter with PC 7, an industrial epoxy. Pics 2 and 3 show the aluminum rod and C-clamp I used to force the U channel into the epoxy and the result. As an aside the epoxy is very stiff and I removed the clamp and rod right after forming. This permitted me to remove the excess epoxy before it set up. I checked the setup (Pic 4)(for you fussy f%#ks that's not my hand it's a friends) and allowed it to cure over night. This morning I lapped the end of the rebuilt anvil and tested . Pics 5 and 6 are the cigar end and a couple of test slices I cut during the test. It works fine and I will call it a successful repair for now. I'll check back in 100 years to report durability.

If you could find a real thin walled pvc or sturdy tube that the plunger would fit in it could be reused by splitting and 2 or 3 hose clamps to hold together., wouldn't you think. Add a 1/4 wood disk to fit end of gun to block tube.

Are you saying the tube you used isn't strong enough?

No its not, but the gun could accomidate a tube slightly larger or the plunger could be ground down to fit inside a 1 1/2" scedule 40 pvc. Finding a sturdy enough tube readily available with little or no modifications would be nice. After pressed you could add wood disks to fit inside dia. and apply much more pressure with a 12" jorgenson clamp and leave till it sets ub a bit.

I would never have a need for it as the only sausage I like fits in a frying pan or bar-b-que pit.:D

True, true. What about splitting a section of pipe. It could be metal. Then securing the two halves in the gun with a third split pipe and three strap clamps. This would be easy to unload.

Absolutely, That dont get much simpler since no tools would be needed to release pressed baccy. I knew you used that head for something other than a hat rack.

Neat trick Tim. can you reuse the tube buy putting it back in the gun? -·-

The split tube would have to be strong enough so after pressure is applied it would not bind against outer tube..if left whole. if outer tube is split also the caulk tube could be reused.

Good points. Why not go with two split tubes? Say light wall electrical conduit. They would be nested with the splits 90° apart and held in the gun with two strap clamps. I would go with thin wall copper cause I have a scrap and can cut it. One size tube would be OK because you let the outer tube have a little gap. I think I would reduce the plunger size a bit to increase the amount of pressure I could get. If you rolled the leaf into a tight cigar and then loaded it into the tube(s) I believe you could get away with one load. A variation on this theme might be applicable to perique but I haven't thought it thru yet.
