Havnt tried it for Baccy, but I seem to remember Earwigs love straw......if you have them in your area it could cause problems.

Can't beat a good mulch, but it has to be the right kind of thing. A good mulch will feed the soil slowly by rotting down over time, keep weed competition down, retain moisture and keep the soil loose and in good condition. The wrong kind will harbour pests like slugs and snails and smother the ground or cause rot to set in to your plant's stems. Straw is a very good mulch if you are in dry conditions, but don't draw it right up to the stems of your plants - leave some bare earth around them. I have seen some amazingly productive gardens in continental Europe that use straw that has been used for animal bedding - the urine from the animals gives the straw a great slow nitrogen boost to the gardens and they grow some unbelievable stuff there.

I forgot, I don't know how.
Last year I put down newspaper first and straw on top in the garden.
Everywhere The newspaper blew away, lots of it did.
It turned into a hay field.
Make sure it is all straw without any seed tassles mixed in.

My next door neighbor raises dairy goats, and has offered me all the used, straw bedding that I want. I'm sure it's full of goat urine and manure. But maybe seeds also. I believe that if it comes from the bottom of the pile, it will have composted to some extent, and killed the seeds from the straw. (In Xanthi, Greece, goats are pastured directly on the tobacco fields during the early spring.)

I'm thinking seriously about trying some.

Even if you don't use it directly for mulch, it would make some great compost. I need to visit my neighbor with horses and start another compost pile.
