You like the mill scale look? I have to clean it off to fine work the metal. Iorn oxcide is hard as hell. It will build up another layer when quenched. This just my 1st proto to get the size down. I plan to make a few.

Yes I like it. "Brut de forge" is a style of forged iron object in wich they are leaved with all the signs of manufacturing, polishing and cleaning only the strictly necessary parts (for example the edge of the chaveta).

Short answer, I need to get on it. This what I have right now. Its got the millscale removed after being hardened. It's milder steel 10xx nothing crazy. I still need clean it and edge it. If interested let me know.

Starting again! Harder steel = Harder to move. Boy I feel like an old man. Any one willing to donate a power hammer? Regardless, made some progress.
That block of metal is an old tractor weight. I can go crazy on it so I don't have worry about maring my cheap anvil. Then move onto the anvil for finer work.

Its on the 2yr plan... back at it! Making another one out of a Hammer Mill blade. I been making hori hori inspired hand shovels out of them and they have been working well.

@GreenDragon the rounded cut outs in your drawing was to help aid in a finer tip for cutting flags/caps ect, correct? What do think about a utilizing a "flase edge" on the points instead? Think of a Bowie knife where the blade is thick and they use a flase edge on the top to help tapper the tip more.

I need to thin her down with out losing the thickness of the spine. Tip to tip is 10 inches. I guess I went xl on this one.

After thinning I took a page from @GreenDragon and Blued it.Tapered to keep a thicker rounded spine.

I call this last one "Conan the Chaveta" its so ridiculously over built(and Heavy) I have tricks up my sleeve to build another one that rivals a commercial Chaveta. I'll start a new thread for that build.

Maybe some cut-outs or Graton's to reduce the weight? Really love the spine on that - looks very comfortable. Also the bluing is very nice.

Do you grab your Cheaveta and hold it with your thumb, plam down to roll a cigar back and forth to round it on the board? Thinking how to add them so it wouldn't impead that.
