Keep in mind that the soil effects the taste of the tobacco. From one report of growing tobacco in water it did not turn out satisfactory taste wise. otherwise it grew fine.
I know this original post was made several months ago, but since people have made comments recently in response. I have grown tobacco hydroponically (Tobacco and Amaranthus are probably the two main reasons I got into hydroponics in the first place). Tobacco does very well hydroponically. I have successfully grown it in a deep water culture and in an aeroponics system both with success. I have another friend that grew some Pennsylvania Red Leaf in an Ebb and Flow system with excellent success as well.

Yeah, this is a very good point. To jump off of it, there are a lot of factors that go into hydroponics which can make or break your results. Once you remove soil, things like pH stability (and thus nutrient absorption), nutrient balance, etc... kind of go out the window. What you gain of course is oxygenation to the roots, and direct access to nutrients. These balances in nutrients can have a huge effect on taste.
