As Deluxe Bob said the other day the season is about done for me too. Most everything I want in is in and color curing. The plot looks bare. Frost will be here soon and that will be the end. I don't believe I'll raise a crop next year but we'll see what the winter brings.

John,
I find that the fewer varieties I grow, the less work, and the less worry. It's still work, though. The spring time digging, and the fall digging seem to take the most calories. Also, the fuss over germinating seed bank grow-outs seems to take more effort than it should. What I found most exhausting this year was all the stooping or stretching required for priming.

If I don't do daily walks through the tobacco for suckering and worming, I end up taking 2 mile walks down the road several times a week, just to keep moving.

You sit, you die.

i would like to grow more but my back says less. digging and weeding are my downfall. did anyone ever try that stuff that is suposed to make weedseeds not germinate and would it be safe to grow tobacco plants in treated soil?

I'm trying it next year. I bought it the other day at lowes on clearance, $6.00 for a full jug of preen.

Ive used it but didn't lsst year because I thought it was causein problems. It wasn't. I have already put it out where I had grass go to seed and will put it out in the spring weather primitin. If you got a grassey spot Spray it with round up then put out treflan now. you may not get a chance in the spring. The product I use is Herbicide Granules by Hi-Yield. It will onley last 3or 4 mounths in to the growin season, That depends on whats growin and putting out seed around the garden. So don't let things go to seed. It will onley kill seed and not stuff that's growin.

I used 3' landscape cloth with X's cut in it for the plants this year. The grass still met in the middle, and the grasshoppers were worse the closer the grass was to the plants. Next year, I'm going to use two runs of 3' cloth with a small gap between them for the plants. I will only have to weed the small gap until the plants get large enough to shade out the grass. The grass from the edges should never grow enough to meet in the middle with this setup, if they get close, there will be enough separation to weed eat rather than pull grass. I think this will eliminate the majority of my weeding next year. Transplanting and weeding are my most painful assignments.

This will work especially well if your row spacing is 3', if 4', they sell 4' cloth. Also you have the added benefit of eliminating more chemicals.
