Hey, it looks like you are the active members with the most experience with this; can you confirm that it is possible to grow a tobacco plant only inside on a windowsill? I'm considering planting one or two during the winter, just for the fun of it; I'm not really into soil-less though, it would be normal garden soil.

Yes, you can….these are 10” pots with potting soil and perlite. The White pot is Prilep, and the black pot is Baffra Basma.
Orientals and other columnar form plants do best on windowsills.
They received full strength triple-20 fertilizer with a dash of Epsom salts at their first watering, then water only, once a week, till they yellowed.

For the Prilep, I allowed mine to yellow completely on the plant, then dry them quickly on a screen over a seedling heating mat. Incredibly sweet smoking leaf!
The Baffra Basma was just air cured to try and preserve its aroma/flavor. Haven’t tried it, yet. Not quite kiln season yet.IMG_9374.jpeg

I am growing some bafra and I love how bushy and dense it looks hopefully it’s a good smoke. Prilep is def on my list of things to try tho as it seems so many users like it.

Aztec crop. Probably will have to move it to the windowsills before the first frost.
Put the largest one in a net cup, and its now in the white bubbler bucket with full strength triple-20 and a 1/4tsp of Epsom salts per 5 liters.IMG_1139.jpeg

One Sucker is 5 days away from the 3-week-post-topping date, and is yellowing nicely. Now I just need to find some room!
Small Stalk Black mammoth is coloring nicely in the cellar (faster than the Little Dutch, MD609, Trabzon-2, and Hyang Cho), but is a bit slow due to the cooler temperatures.IMG_1138.jpegIMG_1137.jpeg

Transferred a Punta De Lanza seedling to a pot suitable for the windowsill. (Still have 4 more- just waiting on other windowsill plants to ripen!)
Hoping this varieties’ columnar growth habit allows it to fit in the window better than other, wider growing varieties.IMG_1171.jpeg

Nitrogen definitely moved through the soil during late season rains.
This One Sucker is 3 weeks after topping, and a deep green color, because it gets the full brunt of every rain storm. It also gets all the wind. Its main stem is a full inch thick at the upper third of the plant!
However, after harvesting the other One Sucker this morning, I noticed something- while tough, and thick, there isn’t a lot of fibrous material in the stalk- nick it with a saw, and you can fold it over to a clean break pretty easily, without having to twist it around to sever any fibers. Small Stalk Black Mammoth is the same. I wonder how much ease-of-harvesting may have figured in these older varieties, as they were being selected. It’s also been fairly windy here (27km/h 16mph), and the One Sucker has had no problems with it.IMG_1188.jpegIMG_1178.jpeg

Punta De Lanza have been potted up, and taken their place as windowsill houseplants.
The two (taller) One Sucker are continuing to ripen (slowly).
And the two Rusticas (left side) are flowering.
The Virginia Gold (3rd from the left) is somewhat pale and a bit stunted- I believe it was hoping for a sunnier climate/season.
The weather has been much colder and wetter this year- I lost about 35 leaves of One Sucker to Downey Mildew (mostly seco leaves) from my outside container crop. So to prevent further loss, it’s all been harvested this morning, at the 3-week post topping date.

The season is ALMOST over…. I still have 5 Vallejano waiting on further signs of ripening, plus 7 windowsill and balcony plants to harvest, along with the ever-green jumbo One Sucker in the big pot, but, it’s nice to know the outside work is pretty much done.
Thankfully, no one in my building uses the “washing up” portion of the cellar……it’s kinda crowded.IMG_1291.jpegIMG_1290.jpegIMG_1289.jpeg

Inside windowsill One Sucker has been harvested, and the window now contains Punta de Lanza and a KY17 (1st black pot on the right).
The Virginia Gold was tossed, because a white mold/powdery mildew started growing on the upper leaf surfaces.
Watching these closely to see if I get the same problem- windowsill temperatures aren’t the best….IMG_1307.jpeg
