LongRedCAVEndish_blendLabel_3_5in_72dpi.jpg

Long Red CAVEndish blend
  • Long Red Cavendish 50% (8 parts per 16)
  • VA Bright 37.5% (6 parts per 16)
  • Perique 12.5% (2 parts per 16)

Surprisingly full pouch aroma. Burns well. Unlike Cavendish that I've made of other cigar varieties, this doesn't smell like "cigar". Nicotine is medium. The smoke aroma is rich and enjoyable. No tongue bite.

I suspect that PA Red Cavendish, Little Dutch Cavendish and Dutch (Ohio) Cavendish might also work for this, since all four seem to be in the same general flavor family. But I haven't yet made those other three into Cavendish.

The high res 3½" label is included in the set linked in this previous post: https://fairtradetobacco.com/threads/pure-tobacco-pipe-blends-you-can-make.3926/page-28#post-165280

I had some scrap wood in the garage just calling to me to do something with it... so I decided to make a plug press for small test batches. Not that there was anything wrong with my current method of a ziploc bag and my bench vice, but I thought this would make for a nice consistent shape and thickness. Tested out with a batch of the above CAVEndish. Roughly chopped whole leaf and sprinkled into the mold, then put in the cheese press overnight. No casing or moisture was added to this batch. The Cavendish was moist enough right out of a sealed canning jar. I may do a ribbon cut then repress to make a crumble cake.

Does your pressing box have a bottom?

I see a warrior holding a golden shield in this medieval battle scene.

It does not have a bottom. I cut out several wood inserts to the exact interior dimensions of the mold (2.5" square). I place one in for a bottom, then add a square of parchment paper on top, then add the tobacco, then another square of parchment, then another insert for a top. If I want to press additional blends at the same time I can simply lay another square of paper, more tobacco, etc. After pressing I simply push out the "stack" of alternating wood and tobacco out the bottom.

EarthRise_blendLabel_3_5in_72dpi.jpg

On the Moon, it might be the first thing in the morning, or late in the day, when Earth rises above your horizon. Either way, this straightforward blend (choice of tobacco varieties is limited, if you're living on the Moon) will fill your personal bubble dome with a rich aroma, and avoids the nasty, filter-clogging particulates that might come from burning Latakia. In blending with Cavendish at this ratio, the Perique is a little overstated, giving a slight tang at the back edges of my tongue.

As a Virginia / Perique blend, this has zero tongue bite, though surprisingly, the nicotine is medium-to-full. An enjoyable smoke. This seems to give a more intense nicotine hit than most of my other Virginia / Perique blends, I believe because of a higher pH.

[You may need to shave your head, and smoke this only while totally naked, so that when you rejoin your fellow Moon dwellers, you don't taint their carefully balanced fart and sweat atmosphere. Be considerate.]

Earth Rise
  • Lemon Virginia Cavendish 62.5% (10 parts per 16)
  • Perique 37.5% (6 parts per 16)

[Using Moon dust, you can sinter it into a solid within a solar oven, and make a dandy tobacco pipe. If you foam it first, you just might end up with lunar meerschaum.]

AT0598_a24a_OvermountainShelter(theBarn)_600_72dpi.jpg

There is a trail shelter along the Appalachian Trail, where it wavers along the Tennessee and North Carolina border, that is know as "The Barn". Not too surprisingly, The Barn is a barn--a fairly large barn, in fact. Its formal name in the trail guides is the Overmountain Shelter. The ground level is only partially walled-in, and is used by hikers for both sleeping (on the wood floor) as well as for dining (on its multiple picnic benches). Most AT shelters are pretty much filled by the time the tenth hiker unrolls a sleeping bag. But The Barn is prodigiously roomy. A ladder leads up through a hole in the second floor, to its spacious hay loft, which alone can easily sleep twenty or more. And the most glorious aspect of The Barn is the spectacular view down the slope of the mountain from its "veranda". After departing The Barn, hiking northward on the AT, one can look back on it for miles, as it shrinks to a tiny red cube in a field of green.

This blend is burley-rich, but still what I would consider a medium Latakia, English-style blend. (They even speak English in the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina.)

The Barn
  • Burley 25% (4 parts per 16)
  • Latakia 37.5% (6 parts per 16)
  • Virginia Red 18.75% (3 parts per 16)
  • Virginia Bright 12.5% (2 parts per 16)
  • Oriental 6.25% (1 part per 16)

Moonrise_blendLabel_3_5in_72dpi.jpg

I think this simple VA / Perique blend is more subtle than Earth Rise (its nearest neighbor). The Lemon Virginia has been cooked into a deep brown that is not quite as dark as the Perique with which it is blended. So I end up with a blend that, at first glance, looks a homogeneous dark brown. It's actually brown and browner.

Moonrise is an anytime smoke--a mild enough aroma for a first pipe, and rich enough in nicotine for late evening. I made the Lemon VA Cavendish from WLT Lemon VA, and the Perique is WLT Perique. So if you go with your own take on Cavendish and Perique, you may have to do some tinkering with my 3:1 ratio.

This appears darker without the flash.

Moonrise
  • Lemon Virginia Cavendish 75% (12 parts of 16)
  • Perique 25% (4 parts of 16)

Hello!
I've not found my old account so I've opened a new One. My name is Vilberto and I'm from Italy.
I read this interesting discussion and I Ask you: how can I modify a very acid pH from a Virginia? Just mixing some Perique or some Fire cured I will not feel bit tongue anymore or It Is necessary for example to Press this blend to mix the different tobaccos and the different pH? Or ti leave the blend maturing some months....? I do not know if my question Is clear but I have a very scholastic english. Next time Ill use Google translate

@vilbertob : to change the pH, you don't need to press or let your blend mature. Just mix acid flue cured tobacco with perique or dark air or fire cured for example. The smoke from the different tobaccos will blend while you smoke them.
Of course, if you let your blend rest a few month, it will become more integrated, more "smooth". The same with pressing.

Ho @Charly thank you for your clear answer! I've learned more in this forum in 1 month that in previous 12 months.... I was very confused because there Is someone also in this forum who says that is the alcaline pH responsible of the bit tongue.....so everything was confused. Now I did understand!
